When the Stars Align

They say if you're a writer, never stop writing. Like every other skill it needs to be honed consistently to grow and improve. I took a break from blogging to regenerate and refocus.

Why am I writing this blog?
What is its purpose?
Is it worth it?

I may not have any concrete answers to any of those questions, but sometimes, ideas are enough. Occasionally, you need to let out your thoughts. Mine just happen to be about fashion. It seems my brain is on high fashion alert at all times, when I'm not thinking about the leaves on the trees, what to have for lunch, or the next book I'd like to read.

Today, I'm thinking about the article I just read regarding Scorpios who pursue fashion. Now, I'm no firm believer in astrological predictions, but I think there's something about our personalities that may be written in the stars. Am I anything like Anna Wintour (Vogue EIC) or Robbie Myers (Elle US EIC))? Probably not. But maybe we all have the potential to be.

I'd like to think that an article like that can inspire me to aim higher, to reach for the stars, simply because the stars are on my side. Sometimes the stars are super bright and clear in the darkness. Other times, they're a little more difficult to see. This may be one of those times. With the days getting shorter and the night becoming a more prominent part of our lives, maybe it's high time we pay attention to the stars. They could be trying to tell us something.

Starry Night - Van Gogh

Ponder that,

My Newfound Crop Top Addiction

After a one-month hiatus, I think it's time we engage in conversation again, shall we? Let's discuss one of my favourite summer trends this season (and the one before that and the one before that): crop tops. When this look resurfaced, I was a little on the fence. A deep V is one thing, but my midriff is something I never thought I'd be showing off anywhere but at the beach. Every season, I've tried wearing this look in a variety of ways. First, as a lover of high-waisted pants, I paired it with those and found it immensely practical and appealing. Subsequently, I went for the high-waisted skirt, while showing the least amount of midriff possible. Ultimately, I gave in by offering a slight peak at my midriff without bordering on vulgar.

via teenvogue.com
I've found that with every trend, it takes a few tries to get it right and make it feel like you. Whether a pair of oversized slides or a wide-brim hat, some things are always going to make a statement (especially in a conservative fashion environment), but if you own it, it'll just become a part of you.

That, my friends, is what happened to me and the crop top. After much deliberation, I've left a space for them in my closet (right before my regular sized tops) and they have become my friend. I now possess a full selection in a variety of neutrals and before long, I will have a few colours to add to the mix. Today, it's all I can buy and I can't seem to rework my regular tops.

As a petite person, a crop top is often more flattering than the regular kind. It elongates my torso and looks cute to boot. My recommendation is to slowly ease into it, especially if you're a little on the shorter side. If a reluctant person like myself can warm up to it, so can you. You may be surprised at how good it makes you feel.

Are Hoodies Even Fashion?

Due to streetwear brands like Hood by Air and Vetements, the fashion world can't get enough of the "stoner staple" otherwise known as the hoodie. I can't help but wonder, why?????

While fluffy coats project glamour, bombers are sport chic, and leather jackets are edgy as hell, hoodies are just plain, well, plain. Hoodies are what you wore back in high school gym class because it matched your sweatpants. Hoodies are what you bought after college to wear to bed with your school's colours and logo. Hoodies are what your boyfriend lent you during a long walk on a cold spring night. Hoodies are NOT a fashion staple.

Or are they?

Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh. Fashion has embraced the sneaker, particularly the Adidas Originals and Stan Smiths, and well, Adidas makes hoodies too so by logical deduction...The magazines can't stop talking about getting fit and athleisure, the most popular streetwear trend that transformed your gym wear into day-to-day attire. But, hoodies? Is it the next cool thing that we borrow from the boys or simply a sign we've just given up on getting dressed in the morning? Can a hoodie ever be chic?

Unless you're Kanye West, probably not.

It takes a certain type of person to rock a hoodie like a fashion girl/boy and though the S/S 16 runways have welcomed this newcomer with open arms, it hasn't quite swayed me yet.

HOWEVER, I do admit that a true pro can transform it and potentially, it can become a "fashion". If you're thinking of wearing it with your Roots sweatpants, think again.

How did slides become fashion? How did pyjamas become fashion? All it took was one fashionista to reinvent it. Perhaps sweatpants and a hoodie are not fashion, but maybe if you wore it with your fitted midi skirt? Or perhaps a pair of leather pants?

Like anything else, the way to break into fashion is by breaking the rules, altering the norms, and mixing and matching in a way nobody thought possible. In that case, bring on the hoodie. Who knows? It may become my next closet staple.

Plastic Is Fantastic (Especially for Rain)

"Rain, come at me, because this year, I will be fashionably prepared. You may think you can rain on my parade by frizzing up my hair and soaking up my sandal-adorned feet, but you are greatly mistaken. The fashion world has officially made plastic happen."

via Pinterest
If I were to have a conversation with the rain, that is more or less what it would be like. You may be thinking, "Plastic? Hell no. That cannot be fashionable." Perhaps several years/seasons/seconds ago I may have said the same. Today, I sing a different tune. Thanks to Christopher Kane, my hair shall be left undamaged because of a certain plastic headscarf shown on the runways this year. Will my purse get wait? No it won't. It will be full-on plastic as seen at Loewe's Spring 2016 show. As a result, my belongings will not risk a drop of water. Also, who needs an umbrella when you've got plastic hats at Gary Graham?

Spring may have officially arrived, but that doesn't guarantee endless days of sunshine (unfortunately). In fact, it's known to rain a lot in the springtime (at least in Canada). While this may be good for nature, it's much more unpleasant for us humans, forced to carry a burdensome umbrella that will flip upwards if attacked too harshly by the heavy waters falling from the sky. While your classic trench is always on trend, it loses part of its function without the protective hood to shield your hair from water damage. Nature can sometimes be unkind and that's why we need to find a way to keep our look intact without losing our fashion sense in the process. While the initial response may be one of distaste (what has the fashion world done now), it's undeniable that this trend is quite practical. While your classic rain mac used to be the only option, the Spring 2016 runways introduced  much more chic innovations to make rain dancing so much more fun.

Are you ready to embrace this trend? I don't know about you, but I may find myself dancing in the rain some day soon, an activity I never thought I'd do.

Taking A Break From Fashion Month To Discuss #OscarsSoWhite

Before you read this, I have to confess. This is actually a best-dressed list disguised as an argumentative essay about the predominantly white Oscar nominations this year. So I apologize in advance if that's what you were expecting. Perhaps the very fact that this best-dressed list is slightly too white might make us all think about the current issue plaguing the mind's of Hollywood's elite. I invite you to think about that as you take a look at this best-dressed list. Full disclosure, the choices are entirely based on the dresses, not my opinion of the women wearing them. In my book, every woman on that Red Carpet deserves to be honoured and admired for her work and the dress is merely a matter of taste, that differs from one critic to another. After several hours of watching Mad Max win awards, let's analyze and criticize the most frivolous, yet integral, part of the show: what everyone was wearing (or maybe just my top 10 best).

NUMBER 10
Mindy Kaling in Elizabeth Kennedy
I am a huge fan of Mindy Kaling for a number of reasons. One of them happens to be her classy sense of style. While Mindy has made a few strange Red Carpet choices, this one was simple and yet, also one of the best. The cut was flattering and the surprise at the back gave it a touch of glamour, making it Oscar-ready. Let's not forget to mention, her beauty look is beyond chic.
via racked.com
NUMBER 9
Jennifer Garner in Rene Caovilla
While this look could have potentially landed much higher on my best-dressed list, it remained slightly safe and a tad too predictable for my taste. Regardless, Jen looked bombshell stunning in black with just the right amount of sparkle to stand out on the Red Carpet.
via hollywoodtake.com
NUMBER 8
Rachel McAdams in August Getty Atelier
I may be impartial to Rachel McAdams because she's Canadian, but it's undeniable that green is definitely her colour. While the best green dress just happened to be worn by someone else last night, I still loved the sensual simplicity of this look.
via vanityfair.com

NUMBER 7
Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive
Cate Blanchett always wears Armani Prive and this year is no different. She has never made my best-dressed list though. Until now. Generally, this actress loves to make a statement on the carpet and while I'm usually a huge fan of bold statement-makers, hers never quite succeed at giving me the fuzzy feels that other dresses do. This year, I couldn't decide if I loved or hated this aqua dress. Part of me felt as though I were looking at a sea creature. The other part just wanted to touch it. It's the type of dress you might see in a fairytale and that is exactly what I loved about it.
via abc7.com
NUMBER 6
Charlize Theron in Christian Dior
Charlize Theron is probably the only actress who can actually say she ALWAYS wears the dress (the dress never wears her) because no dress can upstage someone that beautiful. Whether this simple Dior number with a stunning deep V and a necklace that could blind the blind or something as elaborate as Cate Blanchett's dress, nothing can take away from Charlize Theron's modelesque figure and natural beauty. I'm pretty sure Emily Blunt wanted to kill the Academy for forcing them to present together.
via indianexpress.com
 NUMBER 5
Saoirse Ronan in Calvin Klein Collection
This sparkling emerald green custom Calvin Klein dress shone as bright as Saoirse's pride in her Irish heritage. Nothing says best-dressed like a look that came straight from the heart. Not only did she look stunning, but you could tell she felt it too. That is precisely was got her in my top five.
popsugar.com
NUMBER 4
Olivia Munn in Stella McCartney
This dress may have been very simple, but as far as red dresses go (sorry, Charlize), but this one was definitely my fave. It was flattering, eye-catching, and striking against Olivia Munn's beautiful black hair. If I had to pick an Oscar dress, this would be the top choice on my list. The real question is: was it orange or red? I'll allow you to ponder that one.
via nytimes.com
NUMBER 3
Naomi Watts in Armani Prive
Naomi Watts, a constant contender on my best-dressed list, has blown me away once again with her Oscar choice. Like Cate Blanchett, this outfit was fit for an aquatic wonderland, but Naomi was the mermaid and Cate was a sea urchin (no offence to Cate intended). It was a cross between Saoirse's and Cate's dress, only better because it has ombre. I'm in love.
via today.com
NUMBER 2
Priyanka Chopra in Zuhair Murad
Obviously, Priyanka Chopra cheated her way onto this list by choosing to wear the most incredible designer, Zuhair Murad. How could this look possibly have failed? Everything this designer produces is breathtaking and Priyanka owned this look. P.S Maybe this list isn't that white after all.
via popsugar.co.uk
NUMBER 1
And the number one best-dressed on my list goes to...
Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton
Yellow may not be my colour, but it is definitely hers. Alicia's look was romantic, classy, and just bold enough to make her number one on this list. What can I say? Louis Vuitton speaks for itself.
via telegraph.co.uk
Honourable Mentions:
Eddie Redmayne's black velvet blazer.
AND
Chris Rock's white tuxedo blazer.

What was your favourite look from last night's Oscars?

London, London, London: It's Review Time Again

I absolutely love London. You know why? When it comes to fashion, it doesn't follow any rigid rules, but rather, contradicts them, with unusual colour combinations and a lot of rock n' roll glamour. While New York reintroduced the bomber jacket, London reinvented the puffer with shearling collars at shows like Burberry and Topshop Unique. While New York was more about classic femininity with midi length skirts in sheer romantic fabrics, London was all about the mini skirt at shows like Felder Felder and J.W Anderson, two labels who gave the look their own unique twist. While New York designers offered many conservative work-appropriate looks, London was more about embracing the colder weather with head scarves at Mary Katrantzou and plastic rain protectors at Christopher Kane which were emblematic of the rainy city the Brits call home. Some of my favourite shows combined that rock n' roll sex appeal that is quintessentially London with an abundance of fluff that was very Kate Moss. Needless to say, I was smitten.

Are you ready to review?

DAKS

Let's begin our discussion with Daks. While watching this show, three words came to mind instantly: dark, sexy, and mysterious. The collection consisted primarily of head-to-toe black looks, but it was anything but plain. A variety of textures were introduced such as the age-old favourite fringe, sheer panelling (for the ladylike amongst us), lace (for a sexy boudoir-inspired look), and velour (for a hint of melodrama). All of this proved that black is for everyone, no matter your personal taste. Though the first look was a long flowy dress, the masculine-inspired pantsuits that followed made this show ooze of sophistication and attitude. Also, my new favourite accessory made an appearance on a variety of looks: the black fedora. Call it goth meets glamour or Sherlock Holmes meets Hercule Poirot, this collection was infused with mystery and left me wanting more. Some of the best looks included a tuxedo jacket I only hope someone will be gutsy enough to wear to the Oscars, a black feathered skirt that took the 1920s flapper to a whole other level, and a ruffled dress with a bow that strongly appealed to my girly side. Needless to say, I'll need an order of every piece from this collection. Please and thank you.

JULIEN MACDONALD

Are you ready for a glamorous night on the town with a glass of champagne and a man on your arm? Well first, you need to take a look at Julien Macdonald's latest Fall 2016 collection. The designer took everything that is sexy and put it together in a variety of looks only suitable for the model of duty or a woman with infinite confidence (proven by none other than British model, Jourdan Dunn, who owned look 55 at the Brit Awards). Of course, it wouldn't be a party girl collection without a lot of glitter and sparkle, some high slits, and deep Vs that even a true disco diva would have to be quite daring to wear. The primary colour tones were silver and black, but what really struck my attention was the pop of red that almost seemed out of place, yet so consistent with the theme of the collection. If you're daring enough to try one of these looks at your next big event, I urge you to go for a long slinky number with major cutouts. As for me, I'm smitten with the little white dress that closed the show fit for a ballerina and sex kitten all at once.

FAVOURITE LOOK: 55
via vogue.com
DAVID KOMA
Every year, I like to talk about David Koma because he seems to know exactly what women yearn to wear, or maybe just me. This season, the collection was all about structured lines and muted tones like pale grey and white. The designer maintained his signature architectural theme on many of his looks with asymmetrical hems and strategic cutouts at the shoulders. The collection veered into darker territory halfway through the show with head-to-toe black looks combined with metallic accents and the ever-so-edgy cobalt blue. Some specks of red were introduced on a few sportswear inspired dresses and mixed print dresses. By the end, the handiwork was blatant and sexy with bits of metal scattered in unusual places to create works of art you would have only expect to see at the Tate.

FAVOURITE LOOK: 19
via vogue.com
MULBERRY
Mulberry hasn't presented a show at London Fashion Week in a number of years and now that it has finally made a comeback, I could not be more pleased. Coats were definitely the style statement at the show in fall-ready colours like maroon and navy blue with a few striking capes dispersed in between. One of the most remarkable colour combinations in the collection was khaki and maroon, two colours I would have never imagined at the same dinner table, but a combo I can't stop thinking about. The collection eased quickly into edgy streetwear with blouses and dress pants that had just the right amount of attitude and leather accents that still managed to radiate femininity. Bold furs and strong colours like red and yellow gave every look a unique touch while capturing everything that I love about London. When it comes to fashion, this city is fearless and that's exactly what Johnny Coca demonstrated at Mulberry this week with just enough sex appeal to make it rock n' roll. Did I mention, I'm dying for a pair of those platform shoes?

FAVOURITE LOOK: 9
via vogue.com

TOPSHOP UNIQUE
Of course, I always save the best for last. As usual, my obsession with Topshop and Topshop Unique remains untouchable because nothing says London more than this cult favourite brand. Though I could not get enough of the shearling coats, printed mini dresses, and leather accents, my favourite part about this show would have to be the magenta lipstick. Nothing says "I'm a woman with an attitude" like a bold lip colour that adds some extra personality to your outfit. This 80s-inspired beauty look did just that. On another note, half the collection consisted of oversized pieces, such as sweaters, pants, and bulky coats full of fluff that I just wanted to throw on to keep warm in the winter while also looking drop-dead-glamourous. This collection was exactly what London is about: breaking every rule in favour of bigger and bolder prints, a bit of transparency, and a few ill-fitted pieces that somehow still manage to look sexy.

FAVOURITE LOOK: 5
via vogue.com
While I shed a tear for London and wish I were there, it's now time to move on to Milan. But first, let me know which shows were your favourite in this rock n' roll city.

Still Talking About Couture Week

If you missed Couture Week, you're in luck. I am about to review the top five must-watch shows. Are you paying attention? Good. Right before you sit back, relax, and sign in to Vogue Runway (you're ultimate fashion week guide) to keep tabs on Fashion Month, you get to enjoy Couture Week and fantasize about every look you wish you had hanging inside your closet (or about attending the Oscars in one of those dresses). From the romantic Giambattista Valli to the spectacle at Chanel, Couture Week is a dream-like experience featuring such a wide selection of looks that it becomes almost undefinable. Couture is a runway of artwork and unlike ready-to-wear, it possesses the magical powers to seduce each and every one of us. Every dress invites you to discover its details with wonder and bewilderment as you become immersed in the catwalk. Now, are you ready to review?

JEAN-PAUL GAULTIER
It may be almost 30 minutes long, triple the time of your average runway show, but when it comes to Jean-Paul Gaultier, every minute is worth it. While I still feel nostalgic for the days of ready-to-wear, it's undeniable that Gaultier's strongest asset is la Haute Couture. Every runway show he presents tells an elaborate story and if you've ever seen one of his shows, you'll know that the spectacle is directly related to his own fun-loving personality. Now, let's get to the point, shall we? This show began with a wide array of models in fancy sleepwear for the rich. Some of the features included gold lame and traditional bedtime stripes, but the show was anything but traditional. It gleamed and sparkled like the two-piece outfits on the runway and show-pony chapeaux to match. The models walked down the runway with sass and a bag-girl attitude only suitable at a Gaultier show. It was all very "rock n' roll diva who stayed out very late at a Studio 54 party", demonstrated by the models with cigarettes hanging off their dramatic pouts. Everything was loud and vibrant with 70's deep V's and bralets that added much sex appeal. How do I score this one? I'd say 8/10. I've seen wilder Gaultier, but this definitely kept his fervor intact.

FAVOURITE LOOK: 36
via Vogue.com
VALENTINO
What can I say about Valentino that hasn't been said before? It is the definition of romantic, demure, and totally nostalgic for a time where high necklines and an elegant bodice were what people wore every single day. It perfectly encapsulates the mood we're all currently feeling by taking us back to the past, to a time where living in a castle was totally legit. It felt like an episode of Game of Thrones with Medieval headgear and velvet galore. There were several deep-V necklines, but somehow it came off as innocent and majestic rather than provocative in a Jean-Paul Gaultier type of way. For the most part, the colours remained earthy with some Roman goddess white numbers to take note of (notably looks 43 through 46). While the collection may seem dated to you, it's traditionalism is exactly what makes it fit so well with our nostalgia. Just turn on your television and you'll see that it's all about our history, an escape from selfies and smartphones. And I must say, even though I watched the show on social media, my mind was fully in tune with Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri, the brains behind the collection.

FAVOURITE LOOK: 4
via Vogue.com
 CHRISTIAN DIOR
We may have lost Raf Simons at Dior, but the brand is still true to the original designer with an underlying feeling that Raf's influence is still very much present. The collection was feminine and sweet with flared hems and colourful prints that embodied the strong artistic influence at Dior. One of the dominant Spring 2016 trends made an appearance throughout the show: bare shoulders. Is it safe to say we may be spotting this one during awards season this year? Jennifer Lawrence, I'm looking at you. A few other characteristically girly touches were the ruffles, sheerness, and giant bows tied at the feet. Nothing captures Dior better than a classy stiletto heel with a hint of ooh-la-la. While most of the collection portrayed a strong sense of femininity, the oversized jackets and vests added some masculine edge to the collection. But rather than appearing out of place, they felt empowering in contrast with the softer looks. Raf may be gone, but his legacy lives on and so does Christian Dior's. This was only a hint of what's to come and I'm eager to discover the new touches that will be introduced to the brand during Paris Fashion Week.

FAVOURITE LOOK: 6
via Vogue.com
CHANEL
Chanel would have to be one of the most highly anticipated shows at Couture Week. First of all, Karl Lagerfeld always manages to deliver nothing short of perfection regardless of how many collections he's scheduled to present. While Valentino brought a Game of Thrones touch to its runway, Chanel inspired itself from Star Wars with Princess Leia hairdos to compliment dramatic stage makeup. Though the beauty presentation may have been intense and theatrical, the clothing was anything but. Keeping the Chanel vision alive, Karl had his models walk the runway in classy suits in sophisticated colours like navy blue and white. The necklines were high and the hemlines were low, drawing attention to the details on each elaborate garment. Some of those details included Karl's customary fanny packs and flower motif buttons. As the show progressed, the materials got flowier and softer, appealing to our romantic side. What remained the same was the class and sophistication of every look, whether it contained a feathered skirt or a hint of sparkle. As per Lagerfeld style, comfort was key when it came to the footwear. Rather than put the models in sneakers, this season, they wore the black and white Chanel shoe with a grass-friendly wedge for your neighborly garden party. Now, I don't know about you, but I am ready for some hors d'oeuvres in the garden right about now.

FAVOURITE LOOK: 68
via Vogue.com
GIAMBATTISTA VALLI
While Chanel may be the most well-known and consequently, sought after, Couture collection, Giambattista Valli speaks to my soul and his collections, ready-to-wear and couture alike, never fail to capture my heart. Each piece is consistently beautiful with ruffled accents on sweet mini dresses and floral prints that can only make you think of a field of flowers on a bright sunny day. The textures at Giabattista Valli make you want to reach out and touch them through your computer screen as you watch each model cascade down the runway. While the show began with shorter hemlines, it took a turn halfway through with a few longer and fuller skirts (namely looks 16 and 18). At this point, we entered into the realm of black and white juxtaposed to create an image of a sweet girl with a hint of edge. The black cape dress on look 24 was a personal favourite of mine because it encapsulated the dark and romantic theme perfectly. And of course, it wouldn't be a Valli show without some extravagant tulle dresses at the very end that have developed into his personal signature.

FAVOURITE LOOK: 9
via Vogue.com
Eager to watch the full shows? Don't forget to check them out via YouTube along with Vogue.com. Then, I'd love to know which was your favourite. Was it Valli or Valentino? Or maybe it was Versace?

The Golden Globes: Who Did It Better?

It's that time of year again. A time when you can no longer step out of the house without worrying your fingers might fall off. But also, awards season. It began last night with the 73rd Annual Golden Globes. The evening started awkwardly enough with Ricky Gervais claiming he won't be offensive which was, of course, a lie, or a joke (whichever you prefer to believe). From a borderline inappropriate comment about Caitlyn Jenner to a severely inappropriate comment about Jodie Foster, Gervais knew no limits. Though I may have missed the last hour of the show, I managed to catch the full red carpet and that's where all the excitement lies anyway. Am I right? Apparently, a few people had similar ideas this year and nobody consulted each other. Though in some cases, this may be an unfortunate mishap, in my book it's a chance to compare and contrast. The Magical Third Element

Hello lovely readers,

I'm back after a four month hiatus with a deep and heartfelt apology. Due to foreseen circumstances (school, work, and other highly significant stress inducers), I put the blog on hold and am full of regret and a powerful new craving to write. Hopefully, this powerful new craving will translate into something magical in today's post.

Speaking of magic, for the last few months, I've been trying to determine what sets a fashionista apart from the rest. Don't get me wrong. I think we are all equals and that was in no way meant to place the fashionista on some kind of pedestal encrusted with Swarovski crystals (if it must). What I am inferring is that there is something special that makes one look at a girl on the street and exclaim (in our minds, of course), "that girl is a total fashionista" (perhaps in more natural-sounding words).

The question is: what is it? What is that magical element?

After much contemplation and a tad bit of research, I discovered that it must be her "third element". While my foray through Paris led me to believe that less is more, Montreal is all about "a little bit more is better than less". Allow me to explain.

When I get up in the morning, I have my outfit planned from the basic blue jean to the little black dress. However, once I am dressed and ready to go, I often feel like there's something missing. That feeling should not be ignored, my friends. Sometimes it's a sign that your outfit is incomplete and requires a little extra something to make it capital f Fashion. While anyone can throw on a pair of jeans with a basic white-tee (i.e sweater), it takes a fashionista to find that one extra piece that can attract onlookers and lead them to believe she is worthy of the title.

Here are some examples of pieces you may add to make your look go from regular to fashion girl (if those are indeed your aspirations):

1) A belt (preferably one with some fringe or some elaborate buckle)

via fashiongum.com
2) A statement necklace (for those times when you have no clue what to add)

via dvf.com
3) A fur vest (it's almost winter and you know you'll thank yourself later)

via thefashiontag.com
4) A scarf (because all the cool french girls are doing it)

via daisysullivant.com
5) A hat (if you claim to have a hat head and nobody has told you otherwise)

via wardrobelooks.com
6) Funky socks (only when appropriate and can be shown off)

via beirut.raghunter.com
7) A headband (if you're feeling a bit nostalgic for Blair Waldorf)

via blog.jelanieshop.com
So, ladies and gents (but probably mostly ladies), I challenge you to add a third element every day for one week. And believe you me, this is a challenge because I have tried it myself. If you can pull it off, you may put on the fashion girl crown and prance around the streets like you own the place (respectfully, of course). Have a lovely week and ponder it.

KISSES,

Bella

Five Easy Ways To Improve A Basic Outfit

This may look like your average style guide, but it's actually your average style guide simplified. Ever wonder how your favourite model-off-duty (Cara Delevingne) pulls off her basics without deviating into boring territory? Ever wonder how fashion editors stay unique all the time without busting their budget? Ever wonder how you can turn your white t-shirt into a style statement? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may have stumbled upon your perfect list. This basic guide is here to help you pick out the best accessories to compliment your white-tee and jeans. Let's face it, some of us don't have the patience to pick out an elaborately extravagant look every single day and need a little help finding that one piece that can take our outfit from simple to every photographer's dream. Are you ready?

NUMBER 5: The Vibrant Scarf
When trying to figure out what to wear, take your tips from Giovanna Battaglia. This woman knows what she's doing. This may look like a basic grey sweater dress, but Battaglia transforms into a fashion editor extraordinaire with this vibrant printed scarf.

NUMBER 4: Show Stopping Shoes
If it's alliterated, than it's most definitely true. A pair of killer shoes will transform any outfit. Don't be afraid of a wild color (no more black!) and even dare to try a print, because sometimes a crazy shoe is even better than a crazy outfit.

NUMBER 3: A Statement Necklace
Your plain white tee will never look better than with a statement necklace. If you're planning a casual day and have no time to change for your night out, this might be just what you need to prepare yourself for a 5 a 7 with the girls.

NUMBER 2: A Printed Handbag
Preferably, an animal print. Nothing says "I know style" better than a bold handbag. While most will opt for their basic black, some of us prefer to make a statement with a bright pink or some stripes. If your wardrobe consists of basics anyway, who wants a black purse?

NUMBER 1: A Killer Hat
Nothing makes a statement better than some wild headgear. Not sure if you're ready to walk out the door? Add a hat to your look that suits the season. Trust me when I say that this will turn you into an instant fashion girl.

My Controversial Relationship With Slides and Their Inherent Ugly Appeal

Happy Tuesday!

In light of recent news that slides are the latest trend to dominate the streets permeated with fashionistas and my ambivalent feelings towards them, I felt that they absolutely must be discussed. First and foremost, until today, slides have been perceived by the general public as a man's shoe. As a self-proclaimed "feminist" (quotation to signal multiple definitions of the word), I'm pro dressing androgynously. I live for pants, pantsuits, tuxedos, and baseball caps. Slides have officially made the list of things women are starting to embrace and although men may not necessarily consider them "sexy", fashion girls are loving them.

Could it be that men cannot imagine women in this type of shoe because it's always been worn by men?
Or is it just plain ugly no matter your gender?

For those of you who don't know, slides are a form of flip flop without the tong in the middle. They resemble slippers, but they are meant to be worn outdoors. They can be straight or crisscrossed. They probably shouldn't be worn with socks, but nobody is stopping anyone from trying.

The moment I saw them on the feet of bloggers, I was appalled. How could they give in to comfort? Should I have seen this coming when sneakers dominated the stiletto? Is comfort really everything or are bloggers trying to turn something ugly into a fashion statement that everyone will be dying to wear? Is this simply a test that proves bloggers own the fashion sphere? Are they all secretly making fun of us for following suit?

Here is the reality fellas. I bought a pair. I gave in and my favourite part about them is, lo and behold, their ugliness. Whether we like it or not, they make a statement and the negative reactions often add humour to my day. Do I love them or do I love the reaction I get out of them? I couldn't tell. Perhaps a bit of both. Regardless, they are in my closet and I've already worn them.

What ugly trend will I love next? Are the ugly ducklings going to take center stage? What does ugly mean anyway?

Why Are We All So Darn Nostalgic?

When it comes to fashion, it's well-known that designers like to look back in time for inspiration. Whether Dior's full-skirt a la New Look, Coco Chanel's tweeds, or DVF's 70s wraps, we can't help but bring it all back in the Millennium. What does 2015 look like? Perhaps a mix of all the trends we know and love from the past blended into one big nostalgic sandwich. Can we define it? Probably not as well as the other decades. Regardless, designers like Karl Lagerfeld and Marc Jacobs continue to innovate and reinvent looks from the past.

In today's fashion scene, many fashion houses have been reinvented by their new Creative Directors, blending the old with the new. Karl has been head of Fendi and Chanel for several decades, the Oscar de la Renta torch has been passed on to Peter Copping, Olivier Rousteing is the Balmain man we've grown to love, and Valentino currently takes its direction from Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli. There is a wide array of designers who have taken the helm of these major names in fashion history and without tarnishing the name, they have managed to make it there own.

Though the 70s have made a major comeback this season, we've also seen trends from the 90s resurface. A blend of wide leg pants and crop tops, fringe and patchwork, platforms and bold wedges, have made there way onto the runways and the streets, combining decades in a way that wouldn't have been possible when they were actually happening. As we mix and match our favourites from times gone by, who can help but be nostalgic for a time many of us were not even born? I may have not been alive in the 70s, but how incredible is it that I get to relive it through the fashions?

So, this generation may not be defined by anything per say, but perhaps its undefinability is exactly what makes it special. Maybe being undefined is what defines us today. Can you really put a label on anything when the imagination reaches such heights?

If ever you feel as though it's the end of innovation, stop and contemplate the designers around you. Take a moment to think about what you're wearing today that you couldn't wear then. Yesterday may have been about discovery, but today is about crossing boundaries and putting something together in a way you never thought possible.

When Did People Stop Being So Fancy?

Up until the early 20th century, women wore gowns and party dress to the most basic dinner party. Think Downton Abbey style. Today, jeans and sneakers are the norm on the streets. After all, who wants the discomfort of a constricting dress and sky high stilettos?

via pinterest

Actually, I do.

Sure, I consider myself to be a "feminist" (quotations merely because of the multiple definitions of the word). I am well aware that women were put in these clothes to restrict movement. However, due to the rise of feminism, we are currently faced with a choice. We can wear these dresses because we want to, not because we have to.

Wearing a pretty dress with a pair of high heels has become a sign of empowerment. We have finally appropriated our own sense of style and the days of men dictating dress have long gone.

We have designers like Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo, and Isabel Marant to thank for the rise in women dressing women rather than men dressing women. As much as I love my Karl Lagerfeld and Marc Jacobs, I'm a strong advocate for women dressing other women. I also love the idea of dressing like men just because I feel like it. However, in the age of nostalgia, I can't help but wonder what it would be like if everyone were to attend their dinner parties in fluffy dresses and intricate updos. When we're making our own decisions, wouldn't it be fun to go back to those days with new found purpose?

Now, I'm not saying we should be uncomfortable. All I'm saying is that a little glamour and glitz every now and then wouldn't hurt. As the saying goes, "the world is your runway". Dress like you believe it.

Sneakers And Dresses: A Revolutionary Combo

I have a confession to make. I hate flats. I can't for the life of me see the pleasure in wearing this type of shoe on any occasion. I understand that the pointy-toed version looks lovely on Alexa Chung. I'm also impartial to the Chiara Ferragni collection of whimsical flats with little cat faces. However, I will never find them flattering. They don't elongate your legs, nor do they do anything for your figure. I like to refer to them as the "useless" shoe.

Unfortunately, summer is a season that inspires a lot of walking. From a casual stroll in the park to simply a walk on the beach, 'tis the season to let go of the vehicle and opt for a more eco-friendly leg-strengthening oxygen-inhaling mode of transportation.

I, for one, am a huge advocate of walking. Perhaps it's the winter months of isolation and hibernation that make me want to walk everywhere come summer, but I just can't resist taking the longer route to my destination.

As a woman who loves her heels more than anything else in her closet, it pains me to admit that my favourite shoes are NOT walking friendly. So, when the sneaker trend took over the fashion world, I was beyond pleased. Believe it or not, I can fancy myself in a sneaker much more than a ballet flat. It's an inexplicable attachment that makes me want to wear them with absolutely everything. Though my heels will remain my favourites, I will sometimes intentionally choose a pair of sneakers for style purposes rather than mere practicality. It's beyond comprehension.

I can't seem to figure out why I prefer a sneaker. Maybe it's the little tomboy inside of me trying to inch out. Either way, what I once believed to be a shoe reserved for sport is now a fashion piece I actually enjoy wearing. As sneakers continue to gain popularity amongst fashionistas like Man Repeller, Leandra Medine, and top models like Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn, they have become increasingly more versatile. Worn with skinny jeans, skirts, and dresses alike, it's clear that anything goes.

My favourite pairing of the moment? Sneakers with a summer dress.

via thetrendspotter.net
If there's one thing I love in the summer time, it's putting on a simple dress for a walk in the park. Choosing to wear it with a sneaker makes it a fashion statement I simply cannot resist. After all, sneakers with pants are way too conventional for me.

Will you be wearing sneakers with your dress this season?
