Who Dressed Best At Cannes?

I've never been so excited to conjure up a best-dressed list. You know why? Because Cannes is glamour, elegance, class, and little bit of rebellion personified. It's a place so classy that being dressed to the nines is a must (whether you're a regular person or a celebrity). Though they all have stylists, these celebs still deserve credit for rocking these beautiful looks. Even the ones who usually make odd red carpet choices looked drop-dead gorgeous at Cannes this year. I'm talking to you Anna Kendrick (though I love her anyway). Some women like Kristen Stewart, Blake Lively, and Kendall Jenner had a few rockstar looks at Cannes and one can only imagine the difficulty of selecting just one. However, I approached the task with fervour and I have come up with a list of mouth-watering, eye gaping, choices. Ready?

NUMBER 10

Naomi Watts in Armani Prive

 Although Naomi Watts always seems to be rocking the same strapless form-fitting Armani Prive look at every event, she consistently looks stellar doing it. This is a woman who knows her body and what works for her. Consequently, she is also always a best-dressed contender.

Anyone who wears Philosophy is immediately on my best-dressed list. Barbara Palvin looks feminine, pretty, and super on trend in this pale pink ruffled gown. My girly side is beyond excited about it.

Though Jessica Chastain looked stunning in her yellow Armani dress, this has to be my favourite. From the tassled waves to the embellished gown, Chastain is so 1920s chic with a mix of old Hollywood. I'm completely obsessed.

Don't you want to swing around in that dress? I know I do. I think it's clear to see that red is Rosie's colour. Though she looks gorgeous in almost everything, she shines even brighter in red. Also, that flower at the neckline is simply perfect.

The Golden Globes: Who Did It Better?

It's that time of year again. A time when you can no longer step out of the house without worrying your fingers might fall off. But also, awards season. It began last night with the 73rd Annual Golden Globes. The evening started awkwardly enough with Ricky Gervais claiming he won't be offensive which was, of course, a lie, or a joke (whichever you prefer to believe). From a borderline inappropriate comment about Caitlyn Jenner to a severely inappropriate comment about Jodie Foster, Gervais knew no limits. Though I may have missed the last hour of the show, I managed to catch the full red carpet and that's where all the excitement lies anyway. Am I right? Apparently, a few people had similar ideas this year and nobody consulted each other. Though in some cases, this may be an unfortunate mishap, in my book it's a chance to compare and contrast. I may have been less than impressed with the selection of dresses, but I had much more fun because of it. Here are my style awards for the evening.

The Met Ball's Best Dressed Divas

This year's Met Ball theme, "China: Through the Looking Glass", was one of the most challenging to date. There's nothing more daunting than a theme that invites Americans to inspire themselves from another culture that they may or may not know much about. Some people stuck to the theme, such as Emily Ratajkowski, Alexa Chung, and Irina Shayk. Others opted for something slightly off putting and avant-garde like Katy Perry, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Solange Knowles. Some women decided to showcase their bodies and ignore the theme altogether, such as Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, and Dakota Johnson. All in all, it was an evening to remember because almost every look attracted a stare and if it didn't, it was probably forgotten the next day. After checking out everyone's outfit choice, I couldn't resist creating a best-dressed list that best reflected my top choices of the night. Whether they stuck to the theme or not hardly matters when heads were turned and eyebrows were raised.

Kristen Wiig in Prabal Gurung

Someone forgot to tell Kristen Wiig that the theme wasn't Greek goddess. Regardless, she definitely looked like one in this yellow floor-length Prabal gown.

Gigi Hadid in DVF

Apparently, it was a night for red dresses. Ladies like Gigi Hadid, Amal Clooney, and Poppy Delevingne, opted for this bold hue at this year's Met Gala and each wore it well. Gigi's dress may have not reflected the theme, but the floral detailing definitely reminded me of a beautiful Asian garden.

Kerry Washington was obviously going for the stop-in-your-tracks-and-take-your-breath-away look in a pastel pink high-low Prada gown with green Mary Janes no less. This one also had a party in the back to add to its glamour with a lovely bow behind the neckline fit for a princess.

And the biggest shocker of the night goes to Diane Kruger in Chanel (not really, though). Kruger opted for a chic white look and as the antithesis of Kerry Washington, she chose to wear pants. Let's all keep in mind that these pants were beyond amazing so we'll give her that one. Points for romance and originality, but whether or not it fit the theme is another story altogether.

The Ultimate Best-Dressed List: Oscars 2015

Last night was the biggest night of the year in cinema and in fashion. Celebrities of the highest caliber walked the Red Carpet in the most luxurious dresses and tuxedos to celebrate film, and of course, show off their designer garbs. As per usual, I have decided to indulge in one of my favourite hobbies: creating a best-dressed list. Though you may have already seen an abundance of lists on websites like Glamour, Vogue, and Harper's Bazaar, this one will provide commentary on my picks for best-dressed of the night. If you're even the slightest bit curious, take a look at my choices below.

NUMBER 10

ANNA KENDRICK in THAKOON

Though Anna Kendrick is one of my favourite people in Hollywood (seeing as we are soul sisters), I tend to dislike her fashion choices. For once, I was impressed. One of the first people to walk the Red Carpet, Anna shocked onlookers by wearing something surprisingly elegant (no offense, Anna). This peach Thakoon dress with a neckline made of diamonds took everyone's breath away and her hair was Oscar perfect if I do say so myself. Finally, I can say "bravo, Anna". You have mastered humour and fashion alike. I like you even more now.

CHRISSY TEIGEN in ZUHAIR MURAD

Chrissy Teigen looked like a goddess in this baby blue Zuhair Murad dress (doesn't she always?). Though I'm not usually a fan of the deep V combined with a slit, somehow she pulled it together without crossing the line after sexy. The dramatic berry lip and retro waves made it an even more striking look and since she isn't in the film business, we can rest assured that her goal was to make the best-dressed lists. Mission accomplished.

While some celebrities prefer the understated, others opts for something slightly more jaw-dropping. Usually, the fresher faces. Take Felicity Jones, for example. This celeb took the diva route with a custom Alexander McQueen dress/ball gown to assert her princess status. Since she looks like a munchkin in bangs, she pulled it off. But don't be fooled by her angelic demeanor. This dress says: I'm here to win, bitches.

Though J.Lo always exposes her cleavage, this time it was in a more tasteful way and I applaud her for it. She kept it sexy with the deep V neckline and naked colour, but rather than opting for a deep slit, she went for the heavy tulle princess dress like Felicity. She may have been just a presenter, but when it comes to fashion, she was clearly there to impress and it's safe to say that she did.

As always, Lupita makes the best-dressed list because she knows exactly how to assert her icon status. The starlet chose a custom Calvin Klein dress composed of 6,000 pearls. Not bad for a Hollywood beginner. Looks like we'll have to be on the lookout for this leading lady, because her fashion choices prove she's a force to be reckoned with.

ROSAMUND PIKE in GIVENCHY HAUTE COUTURE

Though Rosamund Pike scared the bejesus out of me in Gone Girl, I was absolutely obsessed with this red Givenchy dress and was able to look past my psycho path image of her. I expected something a little more revealing and was pleasantly surprised by her classy choice. From the texture, to the slit, to the sheer panels at the sides, I was completely smitten with her look.

EMMA STONE in ELIE SAAB

Though many disliked Emma's dress for its yellowish tint, I likened it more to gold and found that it sparkled against her porcelain skin perfectly. Emma knows that the key to winning at the Oscars Red Carpet is by wearing a sparkly Elie Saab dress, but rather than keeping it safe, she chose a unique colour that was unseen elsewhere on the carpet. I salute her for it. Go Emma!

Another lady in red who rocked the Red Carpet last night was Giuliana Rancic. She may not be known for her films, but she is widely recognized for her fashion sense. By default, she always ends up on my best-dressed lists because she has exquisite taste and somehow, I find myself wanting every single thing she wears. Can I steal your wardrobe, please?

Everyone's talking about Gwyneth Paltrow's giant Carrie Bradshaw flower. From the moment I spotted this pale pink Ralph & Russo dress, it was love at first sight. Before knowing it was Gwyn, this look was already my favourite and since this woman knows her body more than anyone, she obviously made it onto every best-dressed list. Every time she hits that Red Carpet, she gets it right. This was definitely one of her shining moments.

The AMA 2014 Fashion Battle

Last night, the American Music Awards were on and of course, I didn't watch them. Usually, I try to take a look for the purpose of catching the red carpet, but with this crop of music, nothing pulled me in and I knew that all the fashion would be online within moments (thank you digital media). After taking a look at some photos, I came down to a few conclusions:
1) The number of obscure Hollywood figures attending this show far surpassed the world famous ones
2) Slits are the new black
3) The men dress better than the women
Since I did not watch the show, I decided to come up with my own list of awards based on the red carpet alone. After all, it is the most important part. Here is what I cam up with:

BEST METALLIC:
Jordin Sparks vs. Olivia Munn
Two women showed up on the red carpet in metallics. Jordin Sparks appeared in a Halston Heritage floor length bronze gown with a deep V neckline and thigh high slit. I'm not sure who she was trying to impress, but it was very 1970s disco chic. Olivia Munn wore a similar look in bold gold Lanvin with slightly less cleavage.

WINNER: Olivia Munn
Neither of them tickled my fancy, but this was the best of the worst.

BEST GOTH LOOK
Lucy Hale vs. Dianna Agron
Lucy graced the red carpet in a Vera Wang Collection mini dress with an embroidered bodice and a dark burgundy lip. It was a little Gatsby meets dark fantasy and very Lucy Hale. Dianna Agron was her blond counterpart in a knee length off the shoulder Marchesa dress with severe body rouching.

The proportions were just well thought out.

BEST UNDERWEAR APPEARANCE

Kendall Jenner vs. Gigi Hadid

Last night, Kendall looked very rock n' roll in a transparent Yigal Azrouel dress with metallic mesh. Gigi Hadid opted for a bralet and Prabal Gurung suit for a little sex appeal meets sophistication.

BEST CONSERVATIVE LOOK

Selena Gomez vs. Jenny McCarthy

These two ladies both showed up in floor-length black dresses. Selena Gomez wore Giorgio Armani Prive with a party in the back, while Jenny McCarthy was in Cushnie et Ochs looking almost exactly the same. However, the verdict was clear to me.

It was just a much flattering look on this diva.

MOST SHOCKING

J.Lo vs. Nicki Menaj

These two fierce females surprised me in very different ways. J. Lo exposed her abs in a cutout Reem Acra dress that not only showed off more skin than any one else in the room, but matched her skin tone so closely I wondered whether she was actually wearing a dress. Nicki Minaj looked conservative as ever in a sharp Alexander Wang black mini dress with discrete cutouts at the sides.

BEST COLOUR

Julianne Hough vs. Rita Ora

Several women showed up wearing bright pops of colour to contrast with the red carpet. Rita Ora wore a glamorous Zac Posen gown in a flashy yellow hue with a flashy yellow train. Julianne Hough showed up in an orange Zuhair Murad gown that hugged her hips like no other.

WINNER: Julianne Hough
While yellow looked lovely on Rita Ora, this one was the clear winner.

BEST DRESSED

Fergie vs. Kate Beckinsale

Not sure why Kate Beckinsale was there, but she looked ravishing in a long white Kaufmanfranco gown. Fergie was also a stunner in a black Halston dress with the winning slit of the night. In a battle of black vs. white, it was a tough call, but after much thought, I reached a decision.

This was just too breathtaking for words. But then again, everything Kate Beckinsale puts on seems to have that affect on me.

Can Side Boob Ever Be Tasteful?

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, side boob is officially a new member of our vocabulary. At every celebrity event, someone decides to show side boob and they either make it to a best-dressed or a worst-dressed list. Depending on the quantity and "tastefulness" of the side boob, they can land in either camp, but the opinions are often not generally unanimous. When I spot these women, I can't help but wonder whether this look will ever make it to number one on anybody's list.

There begs the question: Will side boob ever be tasteful?

To answer this question, I've decided to conjure a list of five celebrity side boob situations and rate them based on whether they are tasteful or not on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the maximum amount of tastefulness they could achieve) according to me. Get ready and feel free to share your own personal opinions.

LOOK 1

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Gucci

I think it's safe to say that this model looks drop-dead gorgeous in green. The slit is not too high or too low to be deemed slutty and the frills add a je ne sais quoi to her look. But let's talk about the side boob. It's subtle and does not take over the entire dress. We are not drawn to her boob, but rather, the bold colour of this magnificent dress.

VERDICT: TASTEFUL 8

Chrissy Teigen in Custom Ralph Lauren

Chrissy looks beautiful in this silver custom Ralph Lauren gown from the 2014 Met Gala. The frills give it a little 19th century vibe that I'm loving and that printed clutch is the perfect final touch. BUT, that is a lot of side boob over there. Are we distracted by the side boob? Perhaps a little. Maybe she simply forgot to tuck it in a little more. Either way, she looks stunning.

VERDICT: QUASI-TASTEFUL 6

Gwyneth Paltrow in Prada

Gwyneth loves her side boob. Apparently. Perhaps her boobs are a cute enough size to pull it off. Her swept bun makes this look super classy, drawing our attention to her terrific bone structure. The dress is super chic and almost makes us forget about her side boob.

VERDICT: TASTEFUL 8

Nicole Richie in Marc Jacobs.

Apparently, a chic bun can divert attention away from side-boob. Nicole Richie wears this slinky Marc Jacobs gown with a peak of side-boob and somehow, it doesn't look slutty (although some may beg to differ). Maybe it's because Nicole Richie effortlessly pulls off everything or perhaps she can use Gwyneth's "my boobs are small, anyway" excuse. Either way, I love this look.

VERDICT: TASTEFUL 9

Jennifer Lawrence in Proenza Schouler

When J.Law got that pixie cut, I knew she'd try side-boob. It just seemed like the edgy thing to do. The contrast between her jet-black dress and porcelain skin makes this a striking look on J.Law. As a newly asserted edgy woman, side boob seemed like a natural choice, but is it tasteful? Debatable.

VERDICT: QUASI-TASTEFUL 5

At the end of the day, side boob is only a reality in the celebrity world that we are not a part of (hopefully). Try side boob at a wedding and you may get a few grimacing faces. 

What have we learned from this?

Side boob can be tasteful only with pulled back hair and the confidence that comes with it. You need Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's model good looks, Chrissy Teigen's spunk, Gwen's poise, Nicole Richie's "I don't care" attitude, and J.Law's easy-going nature to pull it off. Do you have what it takes?
