Taking A Break From Fashion Month To Discuss #OscarsSoWhite

Before you read this, I have to confess. This is actually a best-dressed list disguised as an argumentative essay about the predominantly white Oscar nominations this year. So I apologize in advance if that's what you were expecting. Perhaps the very fact that this best-dressed list is slightly too white might make us all think about the current issue plaguing the mind's of Hollywood's elite. I invite you to think about that as you take a look at this best-dressed list. Full disclosure, the choices are entirely based on the dresses, not my opinion of the women wearing them. In my book, every woman on that Red Carpet deserves to be honoured and admired for her work and the dress is merely a matter of taste, that differs from one critic to another. After several hours of watching Mad Max win awards, let's analyze and criticize the most frivolous, yet integral, part of the show: what everyone was wearing (or maybe just my top 10 best).

NUMBER 10

Mindy Kaling in Elizabeth Kennedy

I am a huge fan of Mindy Kaling for a number of reasons. One of them happens to be her classy sense of style. While Mindy has made a few strange Red Carpet choices, this one was simple and yet, also one of the best. The cut was flattering and the surprise at the back gave it a touch of glamour, making it Oscar-ready. Let's not forget to mention, her beauty look is beyond chic.

Jennifer Garner in Rene Caovilla

While this look could have potentially landed much higher on my best-dressed list, it remained slightly safe and a tad too predictable for my taste. Regardless, Jen looked bombshell stunning in black with just the right amount of sparkle to stand out on the Red Carpet.

I may be impartial to Rachel McAdams because she's Canadian, but it's undeniable that green is definitely her colour. While the best green dress just happened to be worn by someone else last night, I still loved the sensual simplicity of this look.

NUMBER 7

Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive

Cate Blanchett always wears Armani Prive and this year is no different. She has never made my best-dressed list though. Until now. Generally, this actress loves to make a statement on the carpet and while I'm usually a huge fan of bold statement-makers, hers never quite succeed at giving me the fuzzy feels that other dresses do. This year, I couldn't decide if I loved or hated this aqua dress. Part of me felt as though I were looking at a sea creature. The other part just wanted to touch it. It's the type of dress you might see in a fairytale and that is exactly what I loved about it.

Charlize Theron in Christian Dior

Charlize Theron is probably the only actress who can actually say she ALWAYS wears the dress (the dress never wears her) because no dress can upstage someone that beautiful. Whether this simple Dior number with a stunning deep V and a necklace that could blind the blind or something as elaborate as Cate Blanchett's dress, nothing can take away from Charlize Theron's modelesque figure and natural beauty. I'm pretty sure Emily Blunt wanted to kill the Academy for forcing them to present together.

Saoirse Ronan in Calvin Klein Collection

This sparkling emerald green custom Calvin Klein dress shone as bright as Saoirse's pride in her Irish heritage. Nothing says best-dressed like a look that came straight from the heart. Not only did she look stunning, but you could tell she felt it too. That is precisely was got her in my top five.

Olivia Munn in Stella McCartney

This dress may have been very simple, but as far as red dresses go (sorry, Charlize), but this one was definitely my fave. It was flattering, eye-catching, and striking against Olivia Munn's beautiful black hair. If I had to pick an Oscar dress, this would be the top choice on my list. The real question is: was it orange or red? I'll allow you to ponder that one.

Naomi Watts in Armani Prive

Naomi Watts, a constant contender on my best-dressed list, has blown me away once again with her Oscar choice. Like Cate Blanchett, this outfit was fit for an aquatic wonderland, but Naomi was the mermaid and Cate was a sea urchin (no offence to Cate intended). It was a cross between Saoirse's and Cate's dress, only better because it has ombre. I'm in love.

Obviously, Priyanka Chopra cheated her way onto this list by choosing to wear the most incredible designer, Zuhair Murad. How could this look possibly have failed? Everything this designer produces is breathtaking and Priyanka owned this look. P.S Maybe this list isn't that white after all.

Yellow may not be my colour, but it is definitely hers. Alicia's look was romantic, classy, and just bold enough to make her number one on this list. What can I say? Louis Vuitton speaks for itself.

Flats On The Red Carpet: A Do Or A Don't?

Back in the day, the Red Carpet was reserved for Elie Saab gowns and occasionally a Dior jumpsuit (if you're as cool as Emma Watson). While a few have played around with the rules, there is one that seems slightly less flexible.

Can one wear flats on the Red Carpet?

Obviously, we live in a world of progress. Pants are now permitted on and off the carpet. Gay marriage was legalized. Parisians are wearing sneakers. The world is clearly a'changing.

But flats on the Red Carpet? Meh.

It's commonly accepted that after hours of standing in heels, your feet will hurt. If you're Jennifer Lawrence, you may trip on yourself. Twice. Or was it three times? I've lost track. If you're Emma Thompson, you've already said "to hell with it" and discarded your heels in a moment of frustration in front of an audience of A-listers. However, those are the exceptions. Most women will never dare walk a Red Carpet event in anything but their classiest pair of shoes. Whether they are wearing a floor-length gown that hides them or even a tuxedo Diane Keaton style, high heels are always a MUST.

But what if they weren't?
What if someone decided to break the rules?

Sure, heels elongate your legs and make them look 10 miles longer, but what of comfort? What of elegant flats that don't deter from the centerpiece that is your dress? Could this possibly be an underrated concept?

Fashion is about crossing boundaries. It's about inspiring people to change their mind about something they once deemed unacceptable. It's about shortening hems, removing the corsets, and allowing women to move with ease. And isn't that the purpose of flats? Fluidity of movement? Are flats a stepping stone in the feminist debate?

The CFDA Awards: Where A Fashion Statement Is A Must

The CFDA Awards were last night and if you don't know what those are, think of it as the ACTUAL Oscars of fashion (unlike the Met Gala which is mistakenly compared to the Oscars all the time). At the CFDA Awards, designers, models, bloggers, and celebrities alike gather in their most fashionable attire to honor fashion by wearing it and offering awards to those who created it. This year, one of my favourite fashion icons of the moment, Pharrell Williams received the Icon Award and I couldn't be more thrilled. As a major fashion event, the CFDA Awards always has a stellar Red Carpet, but rather than offering a list of the hottest looks, I will focus on those who made fashion statements and took a risk that worked.

AMANDA SEYFRIED

Amanda Seyfried made her statement in a sparkling Rodarte dress. Though I'm not usually one for glitter, the colours and embellishement on this look worked for the star. I may have hesitated on this one, but if it makes you think, you know it made a real statement.

JENNA LYONS

I'm a huge fan of menswear and womenswear colliding, and who better to pull off this look than Jenna Lyons? This jumpsuit may have looked borderline pajama-like, but that's exactly what makes it look so effortless. With a punch of metal in her shoes and leopard on her clutch, she knew just what she needed to give this head-to-toe black outfit that added flair.

CHIARA FERRAGNI

The Blond Salad's, Chiara Ferragni, went for a Rebecca Minkoff outfit that confused me a little. Is it a dress? Is it a crop top? Are those real feathers? All these questions brought me to the conclusion that I liked it. She definitely gets points for being unique.

Hanne Gaby Odiele may not have pleased everyone with her Red Carpet choice, but that's exactly what made it so badass and oh-so model off-duty. A sheer dress paired with an unexpected pair of edgy leather shorts make us all want to be cool enough to pull this off. This outfit demands the attitude she possesses.

Devon Windsor also made her statement in a sheer black dress. This Jonathan Simkai outfit had so many layers of amazing on it, I couldn't stop staring. That's when you know a fashion statement has been made.

Gigi Hadid made her statement in a gold lame Michael Kors jumpsuit. Somehow, her outfit didn't look like it came straight out of an Austin Powers film, but more like a glamorous modern look that attracted a lot of attention.

Choosing the hottest trend of the season to wear at the biggest fashion event of the year may not come off as surprising, but it definitely makes a statement. Rachel Zoe looks stunning as ever in a fringe dress straight out of the Great Gatsby (the modern one with Leo Dicaprio). It may not have been a perfect 10, but it looked like fun, and that definitely counts for something.

The Ultimate Best-Dressed List: Oscars 2015

Last night was the biggest night of the year in cinema and in fashion. Celebrities of the highest caliber walked the Red Carpet in the most luxurious dresses and tuxedos to celebrate film, and of course, show off their designer garbs. As per usual, I have decided to indulge in one of my favourite hobbies: creating a best-dressed list. Though you may have already seen an abundance of lists on websites like Glamour, Vogue, and Harper's Bazaar, this one will provide commentary on my picks for best-dressed of the night. If you're even the slightest bit curious, take a look at my choices below.

NUMBER 10

ANNA KENDRICK in THAKOON

Though Anna Kendrick is one of my favourite people in Hollywood (seeing as we are soul sisters), I tend to dislike her fashion choices. For once, I was impressed. One of the first people to walk the Red Carpet, Anna shocked onlookers by wearing something surprisingly elegant (no offense, Anna). This peach Thakoon dress with a neckline made of diamonds took everyone's breath away and her hair was Oscar perfect if I do say so myself. Finally, I can say "bravo, Anna". You have mastered humour and fashion alike. I like you even more now.

Chrissy Teigen looked like a goddess in this baby blue Zuhair Murad dress (doesn't she always?). Though I'm not usually a fan of the deep V combined with a slit, somehow she pulled it together without crossing the line after sexy. The dramatic berry lip and retro waves made it an even more striking look and since she isn't in the film business, we can rest assured that her goal was to make the best-dressed lists. Mission accomplished.

FELICITY JONES in CUSTOM ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

While some celebrities prefer the understated, others opts for something slightly more jaw-dropping. Usually, the fresher faces. Take Felicity Jones, for example. This celeb took the diva route with a custom Alexander McQueen dress/ball gown to assert her princess status. Since she looks like a munchkin in bangs, she pulled it off. But don't be fooled by her angelic demeanor. This dress says: I'm here to win, bitches.

Though J.Lo always exposes her cleavage, this time it was in a more tasteful way and I applaud her for it. She kept it sexy with the deep V neckline and naked colour, but rather than opting for a deep slit, she went for the heavy tulle princess dress like Felicity. She may have been just a presenter, but when it comes to fashion, she was clearly there to impress and it's safe to say that she did.

As always, Lupita makes the best-dressed list because she knows exactly how to assert her icon status. The starlet chose a custom Calvin Klein dress composed of 6,000 pearls. Not bad for a Hollywood beginner. Looks like we'll have to be on the lookout for this leading lady, because her fashion choices prove she's a force to be reckoned with.

ROSAMUND PIKE in GIVENCHY HAUTE COUTURE

Though Rosamund Pike scared the bejesus out of me in Gone Girl, I was absolutely obsessed with this red Givenchy dress and was able to look past my psycho path image of her. I expected something a little more revealing and was pleasantly surprised by her classy choice. From the texture, to the slit, to the sheer panels at the sides, I was completely smitten with her look.

EMMA STONE in ELIE SAAB

Though many disliked Emma's dress for its yellowish tint, I likened it more to gold and found that it sparkled against her porcelain skin perfectly. Emma knows that the key to winning at the Oscars Red Carpet is by wearing a sparkly Elie Saab dress, but rather than keeping it safe, she chose a unique colour that was unseen elsewhere on the carpet. I salute her for it. Go Emma!

Another lady in red who rocked the Red Carpet last night was Giuliana Rancic. She may not be known for her films, but she is widely recognized for her fashion sense. By default, she always ends up on my best-dressed lists because she has exquisite taste and somehow, I find myself wanting every single thing she wears. Can I steal your wardrobe, please?

Everyone's talking about Gwyneth Paltrow's giant Carrie Bradshaw flower. From the moment I spotted this pale pink Ralph & Russo dress, it was love at first sight. Before knowing it was Gwyn, this look was already my favourite and since this woman knows her body more than anyone, she obviously made it onto every best-dressed list. Every time she hits that Red Carpet, she gets it right. This was definitely one of her shining moments.

The AMA 2014 Fashion Battle

Last night, the American Music Awards were on and of course, I didn't watch them. Usually, I try to take a look for the purpose of catching the red carpet, but with this crop of music, nothing pulled me in and I knew that all the fashion would be online within moments (thank you digital media). After taking a look at some photos, I came down to a few conclusions:
1) The number of obscure Hollywood figures attending this show far surpassed the world famous ones
2) Slits are the new black
3) The men dress better than the women
Since I did not watch the show, I decided to come up with my own list of awards based on the red carpet alone. After all, it is the most important part. Here is what I cam up with:

BEST METALLIC:
Jordin Sparks vs. Olivia Munn
Two women showed up on the red carpet in metallics. Jordin Sparks appeared in a Halston Heritage floor length bronze gown with a deep V neckline and thigh high slit. I'm not sure who she was trying to impress, but it was very 1970s disco chic. Olivia Munn wore a similar look in bold gold Lanvin with slightly less cleavage.

WINNER: Olivia Munn
Neither of them tickled my fancy, but this was the best of the worst.

BEST GOTH LOOK
Lucy Hale vs. Dianna Agron
Lucy graced the red carpet in a Vera Wang Collection mini dress with an embroidered bodice and a dark burgundy lip. It was a little Gatsby meets dark fantasy and very Lucy Hale. Dianna Agron was her blond counterpart in a knee length off the shoulder Marchesa dress with severe body rouching.

WINNER: Lucy Hale
The proportions were just well thought out.

BEST UNDERWEAR APPEARANCE

Kendall Jenner vs. Gigi Hadid

Last night, Kendall looked very rock n' roll in a transparent Yigal Azrouel dress with metallic mesh. Gigi Hadid opted for a bralet and Prabal Gurung suit for a little sex appeal meets sophistication.

BEST CONSERVATIVE LOOK

Selena Gomez vs. Jenny McCarthy

These two ladies both showed up in floor-length black dresses. Selena Gomez wore Giorgio Armani Prive with a party in the back, while Jenny McCarthy was in Cushnie et Ochs looking almost exactly the same. However, the verdict was clear to me.

It was just a much flattering look on this diva.

MOST SHOCKING

J.Lo vs. Nicki Menaj

These two fierce females surprised me in very different ways. J. Lo exposed her abs in a cutout Reem Acra dress that not only showed off more skin than any one else in the room, but matched her skin tone so closely I wondered whether she was actually wearing a dress. Nicki Minaj looked conservative as ever in a sharp Alexander Wang black mini dress with discrete cutouts at the sides.

BEST COLOUR

Julianne Hough vs. Rita Ora

Several women showed up wearing bright pops of colour to contrast with the red carpet. Rita Ora wore a glamorous Zac Posen gown in a flashy yellow hue with a flashy yellow train. Julianne Hough showed up in an orange Zuhair Murad gown that hugged her hips like no other.

WINNER: Julianne Hough
While yellow looked lovely on Rita Ora, this one was the clear winner.

BEST DRESSED

Fergie vs. Kate Beckinsale

Not sure why Kate Beckinsale was there, but she looked ravishing in a long white Kaufmanfranco gown. Fergie was also a stunner in a black Halston dress with the winning slit of the night. In a battle of black vs. white, it was a tough call, but after much thought, I reached a decision.

This was just too breathtaking for words. But then again, everything Kate Beckinsale puts on seems to have that affect on me.

So, New York Fashion Week Happened

September is the best month of the year (no, it's not my birthday). The fashion obsessed compulsively check their doorstep for that September Issue, while scrambling for a new fall wardrobe with a potential for cozy knits, oversized coats, and beanies. Personally, this is my favourite time of year because it happens to be fashion week, or shall I say, month. Though the thought of Spring collections makes us all slightly depressed, it also allows us to aspire to warmer days that will return as they always do. This year, New York Fashion Week was filled with beautiful crisp white, hints of transparency, gingham, and yes, florals. It was exactly what we wanted it to be and more. After watching all the runway shows, here is a review of my top five.

MICHAEL KORS

Traditionally, I haven't been much of a Kors girl. Though I love the accessories, the clothing always seemed far too wholesome for the edgier image I prefer to convey. Despite the long hemlines, I cannot wear due to my unnatural height, the overall feminine vibe of the collection definitely resonated with me. Some of my favourite things were present during the Michael Kors show, including Peter Pan collars, structured coats, matching sets, and a dash of midriff. It made me think of picnics in the park with those you love on bright summer days. Though this may have been due to the striking yellow coat that made its way down the runway, it was also reflected in the gingham print spread across various looks in the show. A bit of plaid reminded us that gingham is not a replacement, but simply another print that makes us all feel wholesome as can be. And if you're looking for a classic white blouse, Kors is the way to go. Michael Kors is a classics man and if you love a good classic, you're in for a treat.

My Favourite Look: 54

I may have chosen the most daring look in the collection (mostly because it's head-to-toe black), but it's only because it's the one that reflected my personality the most. I'm still not over those crop tops, and apparently, neither is Michael Kors. I love the juxtaposition of a simple crop top with a full skirt filled with eyelet motifs. Edgy meets feminine? 'Tis simply divine.

HONOR

Every season I dwell on how much I love Honor and the fact that it is an underrated brand. This season is no different. The collection takes me back to my girlish roots with whimsical prints reminiscent of a healthy candy addiction and oversized bows. As someone who's a self-proclaimed sucker for bows, I couldn't resist much of the collection as it satisfied my deepest fantasy. Though there was a lot of white, Giovanna Randall played with textures in a way that made me fall in love with every LWD in sight. The hints of baby blue were positively delightful and one particular bright orange vest caught my eye. I sincerely hope to see Zosia Mamet sport one of these looks. Fingers crossed.

My Favourite Look: 8

Contrary to the Michael Kors look I chose, this one satisfies my more whimsical side. I love the layering on top as it adds an interesting texture to a simple dress. And as much as I'm a heels girl, I'd buy those flats in a heartbeat.

J. MENDEL

Say what you will, but it takes a true genius to dare to incorporate fur in a Spring collection. Gilles Mendel wouldn't have it any other way. According to Style.com, the collection was inspired by artist, Enoc Perez, a man who shares a mutual love for architecture with the designer. The aesthetic appeal was accentuated by this shared passion through the abstract designs on many of the dresses. Whether a mini or a maxi, every piece was a work of art, but still wearable as can be. The pretty pleats and sexy high slits added some feminine flair, while other looks took on a more structured approach. A particular white jacket caught my eye and I haven't been able to get it off my mind since. With each look, the collection got edgier as leather began to surface, particular in a striking red. Let's not forget those adorable red handbags that were simply to-die-for.

My Favourite Look: 41

There is no combination I love more than a jumpsuit with leather. The slight peak of red makes this look even sexier and increases my obsession with it. And don't even get me started on those shoes.

OSCAR DE LA RENTA

Oscar knows what women want. According to Karlie Kloss, his choochoo, this is a given. Every year, Oscar brings us lovely full skirted gowns that we all dream of wearing on a Red Carpet. This year, there were a few more wearables in the mix that I'm coveting. Once again, there were some crop tops that made it into the mix, proving that they aren't ready to disappear from the fashion scene just yet. Just like in Michael Kors, gingham was the print of choice and pastel pink, the dominant colour. Every pair of shorts on that runway was screaming my name. A few eyelets were introduced as well on full length Oscar skirts and sleeveless blouses. It was all very sophisticated and we were transported to a garden party featuring the most important guests (including the Duchess Kate herself). I hope to see her in one of these looks, but no promises. The biggest surprise was the abundance of oxfords that contrasted with the supremely feminine looks. It was all feathers, floral appliqués, and a Karlie Kloss finale. It was so very Oscar and so undeniably perfect.

My Favourite Look: 40

Sasha Luss looks magnificent in this sparkly flared dress by Oscar. The necklace is a great statement piece without being too loud and everything about this says "wear me".

CHRISTIAN SIRIANO

Who doesn't love Christian Siriano? He captures that feminine flavour better than anyone. More crop tops made an appearance in his collection and this put a smile on my face. Siriano played with transparency and transformed some basic white dresses into magical pieces of art. The feathers reappeared, predicting a new trend, and a bit of sparkle was integrated into the collection to make some pieces Red Carpet worthy. The collection ended with a soft mint green and a jumpsuit only Beyonce could pull off. No matter. Fashion is all about aspiration, is it not? 

My Favourite Look: 9

This is my new favourite LWD. It may look like a classic white dress at first, but if you look at the detailing, you know you're in the hands of an artist.
