Still Talking About Couture Week

If you missed Couture Week, you're in luck. I am about to review the top five must-watch shows. Are you paying attention? Good. Right before you sit back, relax, and sign in to Vogue Runway (you're ultimate fashion week guide) to keep tabs on Fashion Month, you get to enjoy Couture Week and fantasize about every look you wish you had hanging inside your closet (or about attending the Oscars in one of those dresses). From the romantic Giambattista Valli to the spectacle at Chanel, Couture Week is a dream-like experience featuring such a wide selection of looks that it becomes almost undefinable. Couture is a runway of artwork and unlike ready-to-wear, it possesses the magical powers to seduce each and every one of us. Every dress invites you to discover its details with wonder and bewilderment as you become immersed in the catwalk. Now, are you ready to review?

JEAN-PAUL GAULTIER

It may be almost 30 minutes long, triple the time of your average runway show, but when it comes to Jean-Paul Gaultier, every minute is worth it. While I still feel nostalgic for the days of ready-to-wear, it's undeniable that Gaultier's strongest asset is la Haute Couture. Every runway show he presents tells an elaborate story and if you've ever seen one of his shows, you'll know that the spectacle is directly related to his own fun-loving personality. Now, let's get to the point, shall we? This show began with a wide array of models in fancy sleepwear for the rich. Some of the features included gold lame and traditional bedtime stripes, but the show was anything but traditional. It gleamed and sparkled like the two-piece outfits on the runway and show-pony chapeaux to match. The models walked down the runway with sass and a bag-girl attitude only suitable at a Gaultier show. It was all very "rock n' roll diva who stayed out very late at a Studio 54 party", demonstrated by the models with cigarettes hanging off their dramatic pouts. Everything was loud and vibrant with 70's deep V's and bralets that added much sex appeal. How do I score this one? I'd say 8/10. I've seen wilder Gaultier, but this definitely kept his fervor intact.

VALENTINO

What can I say about Valentino that hasn't been said before? It is the definition of romantic, demure, and totally nostalgic for a time where high necklines and an elegant bodice were what people wore every single day. It perfectly encapsulates the mood we're all currently feeling by taking us back to the past, to a time where living in a castle was totally legit. It felt like an episode of Game of Thrones with Medieval headgear and velvet galore. There were several deep-V necklines, but somehow it came off as innocent and majestic rather than provocative in a Jean-Paul Gaultier type of way. For the most part, the colours remained earthy with some Roman goddess white numbers to take note of (notably looks 43 through 46). While the collection may seem dated to you, it's traditionalism is exactly what makes it fit so well with our nostalgia. Just turn on your television and you'll see that it's all about our history, an escape from selfies and smartphones. And I must say, even though I watched the show on social media, my mind was fully in tune with Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri, the brains behind the collection.

 CHRISTIAN DIOR

We may have lost Raf Simons at Dior, but the brand is still true to the original designer with an underlying feeling that Raf's influence is still very much present. The collection was feminine and sweet with flared hems and colourful prints that embodied the strong artistic influence at Dior. One of the dominant Spring 2016 trends made an appearance throughout the show: bare shoulders. Is it safe to say we may be spotting this one during awards season this year? Jennifer Lawrence, I'm looking at you. A few other characteristically girly touches were the ruffles, sheerness, and giant bows tied at the feet. Nothing captures Dior better than a classy stiletto heel with a hint of ooh-la-la. While most of the collection portrayed a strong sense of femininity, the oversized jackets and vests added some masculine edge to the collection. But rather than appearing out of place, they felt empowering in contrast with the softer looks. Raf may be gone, but his legacy lives on and so does Christian Dior's. This was only a hint of what's to come and I'm eager to discover the new touches that will be introduced to the brand during Paris Fashion Week.

CHANEL
Chanel would have to be one of the most highly anticipated shows at Couture Week. First of all, Karl Lagerfeld always manages to deliver nothing short of perfection regardless of how many collections he's scheduled to present. While Valentino brought a Game of Thrones touch to its runway, Chanel inspired itself from Star Wars with Princess Leia hairdos to compliment dramatic stage makeup. Though the beauty presentation may have been intense and theatrical, the clothing was anything but. Keeping the Chanel vision alive, Karl had his models walk the runway in classy suits in sophisticated colours like navy blue and white. The necklines were high and the hemlines were low, drawing attention to the details on each elaborate garment. Some of those details included Karl's customary fanny packs and flower motif buttons. As the show progressed, the materials got flowier and softer, appealing to our romantic side. What remained the same was the class and sophistication of every look, whether it contained a feathered skirt or a hint of sparkle. As per Lagerfeld style, comfort was key when it came to the footwear. Rather than put the models in sneakers, this season, they wore the black and white Chanel shoe with a grass-friendly wedge for your neighborly garden party. Now, I don't know about you, but I am ready for some hors d'oeuvres in the garden right about now.

GIAMBATTISTA VALLI
While Chanel may be the most well-known and consequently, sought after, Couture collection, Giambattista Valli speaks to my soul and his collections, ready-to-wear and couture alike, never fail to capture my heart. Each piece is consistently beautiful with ruffled accents on sweet mini dresses and floral prints that can only make you think of a field of flowers on a bright sunny day. The textures at Giabattista Valli make you want to reach out and touch them through your computer screen as you watch each model cascade down the runway. While the show began with shorter hemlines, it took a turn halfway through with a few longer and fuller skirts (namely looks 16 and 18). At this point, we entered into the realm of black and white juxtaposed to create an image of a sweet girl with a hint of edge. The black cape dress on look 24 was a personal favourite of mine because it encapsulated the dark and romantic theme perfectly. And of course, it wouldn't be a Valli show without some extravagant tulle dresses at the very end that have developed into his personal signature.

Paris: The City of Lights And Elaborate Headwear

Paris Fashion Week is the one week in the year that I look forward to most. It is also the most challenging to condense into five collections because almost all of my favorite designers are in Paris. From Hedi Slimane to Karl Lagerfeld to the dynamic duo at Valentino, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, these talented designers consistently go above and beyond my expectations. This season, Karl Lagerfeld took us to Cafe Gabrielle with models sipping tea in classic tweed suits. At Moncler Gamme Rouge, Giambattista Valli transported his audience to a riding show featuring models in riding caps and a finale of soldiers wearing head-to-toe red military suits and furry hats. Valentino was the star of the season due to a grand finale of Derek Zoolander and Hansel having a catwalk face-off. Keeping his trademark intact, Hedi Slimane was all about the dangerous bad girl who could care less about her reputation. McQueen was all about the wild hair and bondage inspired dresses and Giambattista Valli was infused with whimsical prints and girly frills. Though I was inspired by many of these collections, I chose five favorites to discuss today. However, I recommend it to everyone to check out all the shows on YouTube and Style.com. It was definitely a week to remember.

CARVEN

Carven was revived this season by Artistic Director, Guillaume Henry, who offered a fresh take on the brand. The statement piece was a disc necklace featured on many looks as the standout accessory. The show began with a lace white blouse and wraparound lilac mini skirt to introduce a feminine collection with mod vibes. Another reason I loved it? It seemed like everything was catered to a petite frame. From the skintight high-waisted pants in every colour to the cropped jackets, this was a fantasy for short girls everywhere. Though the models walked in loafers for the most part, the pants offered the illusion of height that petite ladies can only dream of. Will I be converting to flats? Probably not. But this collection made it something to consider.

VALENTINO

What do you get when you combine 80s music, two of everyone's fashion heroes from the 90s, and 60s geometric prints? A Valentino blast from the past salad. This year, Valentino took a turn for the retro without taking us as far back in time as they usually do. The designers began their show with basic monochromatic looks with prison stripes as the dominant print. There were some bold printed dresses topped with elegant floor-length fur coats and of course, the traditional Valentino lace and sheer paneling. But the real shining moment was when Derek and Hansel from Zoolander hit the stage and became the biggest newsmakers at Paris Fashion Week. It was definitely a show to remember.

MONCLER GAMME ROUGE

Moncler Gamme Rouge was fashion month's grand finale and Giambattista Valli made sure it was a memorable one. From the moment his first model surfaced out of the mist in riding gear, we knew this was going to be way more theatrical than we are used to from the designer. Though the theme was consistent throughout the show, there were still some standout pieces I am dying to wear. From the white furry skirt to the oh-so-chic plastic raincoat and some mini neck scarves, I was absolutely smitten with this collection. Once again, mini skirts were the bottom of choice topped with matching jackets in tweed prints. Red was the colour of the moment and we found out why at the grand finale when a line of soldiers clad in red suits and furry hats walked onto the runway to welcome back the models. This show reminded us all that Giambattista Valli is a force to be reckoned with along the lines of, dare I say it, Lagerfeld himself. By placing him at the very end, they proved that he's just as worth waiting for as the legendary Marc Jacobs. Not bad, Valli. Not bad at all.

ELIE SAAB

Elie Saab may have finally gotten the memo that his collections look a little too much alike. Taking on a darker turn this season starting with his backdrop mimicking a dark forest, the designer went from floor-length lace dresses to black minis and military jumpsuits. The show began with earth tones to reflect his inspiration, a natural landscape in a dark atmosphere. Some colourful floral prints were introduced towards the middle of the show that may inspire some celebrities on the Red Carpet. Saab took an edgier route with leather and cutout dresses, but maintained a girly image with his flared cuts and some floor-length flowy looks. Though this was a new approach for the designer, there were still enough Red Carpet looks to satisfy an audience anticipating that particular style. He managed to keep it fresh without tarnishing his image. Well done, Elie Saab.

CHANEL

This year's Chanel show was an ode to the original designer, Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel from the theme, Cafe Gabrielle, to the tweeds and pearls that dripped on the models. The best part? An ultra classy hairband with the double C's at the back of the head that nobody can stop talking about. This may have been my favorite Chanel collection in a very long time. Though I'm not usually one to be decked in head-to-toe tweed, these suits were gorgeous and unique, inviting me to explore the trend. Each one was entirely different, whether a monochrome look or with a touch of pink, and combined with the classic Chanel black and nude pump, it was nothing short of perfection. The Girl bag made its debut, a handbag in the shape of a buttoned cardigan that I hope to see on our favourite celebrities in the near future (*cough *cough Blake Lively). Let's not forget to mention the wide variety of interesting coats, whether a puffer that took puffy to another level, a cape, or a draped over the shoulders #forthesakeoffashion jacket, each one had its own personality to suit the wearer. With Cara's final twirl at the end and a small smile from Karl Lagerfeld, this show made everyone a little giddy and nothing has that effect quite like a Chanel runway.

What Is A Runway?

It is nor hand, nor foot, nor...just kidding. The runway is that which has been redefined by Sir Karl Lagerfeld in recent years as a space for models to enter a fantastical realm wearing intricate designs that pertain to their external environment. It's a space for creativity, wit, and the imagination. It's like reading a really good book with vivid images that makes you want to jump into the world of the characters and escape your own. It's pure magic. THAT is a runway. When people ask me how I sit through each runway show, that's what I tell them. Contrary to popular belief, it is NOT just a bunch of models walking in high heels and hoping not to fall. It's so much more than that. Every season, a select few designers opt for a more theatrical approach to their runway shows by choosing an elaborate backdrop (requiring an even more elaborate budget). We can always expect something spectacular at Chanel and I'll definitely miss the excitement before a Jean Paul Gaultier RTW show and Marc Jacobs' exceptional Louis Vuitton presentations. As a lover of fashion and theatre, I always appreciate when a show has a theme. In fact, I find myself wishing that they all had a theme. Wouldn't it make the whole experience that much more exciting? In honour of those who have embraced the theme concept, let's take a look at my top 10 best theatrical runway shows.

NUMBER 10
Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2005
Fashion is a game and we are the players. At least, according to Alexander McQueen. What started off as a simple runway show became a chessboard. The message? When making your next move, make sure you dress the part (or at least that's what I took from it).

Only Karl can bring an iceberg to the runway. While most designers focus on fall fashion staples, Karl took us to Antarctica (or maybe Canada), directly into winter. Picture the Ice Queen in Narnia on her slay wearing Chanel. Now, that's what literature should look like.

Jean Paul Gaultier Fall/Winter 2014
Jean Paul Gaultier is known for doing things a little differently than the rest. As a theatrical man, he's inclined to make fashion a lot more fun with alienesque models in bizarre settings. This may be called ready-to-wear, but I don't think the world is ready to wear it. During this show, he took us onto an airplane and we flew all the way to the land of Gaultier, where the world is one big party.

Gaultier loves to mix up his shows with segments. Envision your brother's bar mitzvah on crack. It may start with some nostalgic hits, but it soon becomes a conglomeration of party favourites including a Greece segment in which Coco Rocha is Danny Zuko. Enticing? Absolutely. Fun? The embodiment of it.

Chanel Spring/Summer 2015
Karl Lagerfeld loves to make a statement and this year's Spring/Summer 2015 show definitely did. Emphatically. With models walking down the runway as a group, Karl mimicked a protest featuring purses that said "Feministe mais Feminine" and signs with words like History is Her Story. Essentially, it was a shutout to women being awesome. I can vouch for that.

Once again, Chanel makes this list because Karl has a crazy imagination and an even crazier budget. The man transformed his runway into a supermarket featuring grocery items with Chanel's logo splattered all over them. From milk carton purses to cereal box accessories, it was a consumer fantasy.

Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2012
This was my favourite Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton show because the clothing was breathtaking and the merry-go-round took me back to my youth. Featuring models slowly walking down a merry-go-round in 50s skirts with beautiful high buns, it was a complete dream. The best part? Kate Moss closing the show.

So, New York Fashion Week Happened

September is the best month of the year (no, it's not my birthday). The fashion obsessed compulsively check their doorstep for that September Issue, while scrambling for a new fall wardrobe with a potential for cozy knits, oversized coats, and beanies. Personally, this is my favourite time of year because it happens to be fashion week, or shall I say, month. Though the thought of Spring collections makes us all slightly depressed, it also allows us to aspire to warmer days that will return as they always do. This year, New York Fashion Week was filled with beautiful crisp white, hints of transparency, gingham, and yes, florals. It was exactly what we wanted it to be and more. After watching all the runway shows, here is a review of my top five.

MICHAEL KORS

Traditionally, I haven't been much of a Kors girl. Though I love the accessories, the clothing always seemed far too wholesome for the edgier image I prefer to convey. Despite the long hemlines, I cannot wear due to my unnatural height, the overall feminine vibe of the collection definitely resonated with me. Some of my favourite things were present during the Michael Kors show, including Peter Pan collars, structured coats, matching sets, and a dash of midriff. It made me think of picnics in the park with those you love on bright summer days. Though this may have been due to the striking yellow coat that made its way down the runway, it was also reflected in the gingham print spread across various looks in the show. A bit of plaid reminded us that gingham is not a replacement, but simply another print that makes us all feel wholesome as can be. And if you're looking for a classic white blouse, Kors is the way to go. Michael Kors is a classics man and if you love a good classic, you're in for a treat.

My Favourite Look: 54

I may have chosen the most daring look in the collection (mostly because it's head-to-toe black), but it's only because it's the one that reflected my personality the most. I'm still not over those crop tops, and apparently, neither is Michael Kors. I love the juxtaposition of a simple crop top with a full skirt filled with eyelet motifs. Edgy meets feminine? 'Tis simply divine.

HONOR

Every season I dwell on how much I love Honor and the fact that it is an underrated brand. This season is no different. The collection takes me back to my girlish roots with whimsical prints reminiscent of a healthy candy addiction and oversized bows. As someone who's a self-proclaimed sucker for bows, I couldn't resist much of the collection as it satisfied my deepest fantasy. Though there was a lot of white, Giovanna Randall played with textures in a way that made me fall in love with every LWD in sight. The hints of baby blue were positively delightful and one particular bright orange vest caught my eye. I sincerely hope to see Zosia Mamet sport one of these looks. Fingers crossed.

My Favourite Look: 8

Contrary to the Michael Kors look I chose, this one satisfies my more whimsical side. I love the layering on top as it adds an interesting texture to a simple dress. And as much as I'm a heels girl, I'd buy those flats in a heartbeat.

J. MENDEL

Say what you will, but it takes a true genius to dare to incorporate fur in a Spring collection. Gilles Mendel wouldn't have it any other way. According to Style.com, the collection was inspired by artist, Enoc Perez, a man who shares a mutual love for architecture with the designer. The aesthetic appeal was accentuated by this shared passion through the abstract designs on many of the dresses. Whether a mini or a maxi, every piece was a work of art, but still wearable as can be. The pretty pleats and sexy high slits added some feminine flair, while other looks took on a more structured approach. A particular white jacket caught my eye and I haven't been able to get it off my mind since. With each look, the collection got edgier as leather began to surface, particular in a striking red. Let's not forget those adorable red handbags that were simply to-die-for.

My Favourite Look: 41

There is no combination I love more than a jumpsuit with leather. The slight peak of red makes this look even sexier and increases my obsession with it. And don't even get me started on those shoes.

OSCAR DE LA RENTA

Oscar knows what women want. According to Karlie Kloss, his choochoo, this is a given. Every year, Oscar brings us lovely full skirted gowns that we all dream of wearing on a Red Carpet. This year, there were a few more wearables in the mix that I'm coveting. Once again, there were some crop tops that made it into the mix, proving that they aren't ready to disappear from the fashion scene just yet. Just like in Michael Kors, gingham was the print of choice and pastel pink, the dominant colour. Every pair of shorts on that runway was screaming my name. A few eyelets were introduced as well on full length Oscar skirts and sleeveless blouses. It was all very sophisticated and we were transported to a garden party featuring the most important guests (including the Duchess Kate herself). I hope to see her in one of these looks, but no promises. The biggest surprise was the abundance of oxfords that contrasted with the supremely feminine looks. It was all feathers, floral appliqués, and a Karlie Kloss finale. It was so very Oscar and so undeniably perfect.

My Favourite Look: 40

Sasha Luss looks magnificent in this sparkly flared dress by Oscar. The necklace is a great statement piece without being too loud and everything about this says "wear me".

CHRISTIAN SIRIANO

Who doesn't love Christian Siriano? He captures that feminine flavour better than anyone. More crop tops made an appearance in his collection and this put a smile on my face. Siriano played with transparency and transformed some basic white dresses into magical pieces of art. The feathers reappeared, predicting a new trend, and a bit of sparkle was integrated into the collection to make some pieces Red Carpet worthy. The collection ended with a soft mint green and a jumpsuit only Beyonce could pull off. No matter. Fashion is all about aspiration, is it not?

This is my new favourite LWD. It may look like a classic white dress at first, but if you look at the detailing, you know you're in the hands of an artist.

Birkenstocks Are NOT Birkins

Can someone PLEASE tell me who decided to bring back Birkenstocks?

After seeing them on Heidi Klum, fashion blogger, Jules of Sincerely Jules, and even my style icon, Brad Goreski, my jaw dropped so low, it took a tank (full of Birkenstocks) to lift it back up.

What has happened to the fashion world?

Has everyone decided to opt for comfy/ugly because heels were just too painful? Did we simply forget about WEDGES?
Are these the "Uggs" of the summer (another debatable fashion trend that'll never really go away)?
Has everyone fallen on their head?

Sure, they promise comfort, but that's ALL they promise. Isn't fashion about style? Or perhaps that term has become so flexible that anything goes if a designer says it does.

After Phoebe Philo introduced furry flip flops at Celine, the fashion world turned upside down. Lo and behold, people actually started wearing them. For her Spring 2014 collection, Isabel Marant had her models walk tdown the runway in Birkenstocks and somehow, it looked ridiculously cool. And who can forget Karl Lagerfeld's newfound obsession with the sneaker? He practically invented "comfy chic".

Has the fashion world gone awry or are all the designers trying to make comfort and cool synonymous terms? If so, shouldn't I be more pleased? Isn't this the most wonderful news you've ever heard?

The comfort revolution has officially commenced and I can only wonder what will come next. Will we be seeing track-pants on the runway? Are slippers about to make their way onto the street style scene? If the pyjama suit could become a trend, all you really need is to have Marc Jacobs to introduce a pair of fluffy little piggy heads and it'll be fashion. Should we expect bathrobes to become a staple? What about (dare I say it) SWEATPANTS?

According to Karl Lagerfeld, "Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you bought some sweatpants."

I guess it won't be Karl then. Perhaps Stella McCartney?

Fashion Really Loves Shoulders

If there's anything I've learned from having barely there shoulders, it's that blazers and blouses don't like me very much. Everything looks oversized on my petite frame and I've just about given up on finding tops my size. After spending years wondering why my purse consistently slips down my arm, forcing me to pull it up every .02 seconds, I've finally come to the conclusion that I have sloped shoulders that simply cannot support anything. Thankfully, it's a common problem.

It turns out that fashion loves to highlight the shoulders. From structured blouses to 80's shoulder pads, the shoulder is major trending and I continue to sigh in frustration. From the boxy jacket at 3.1 Phillip Lim to the square blouse at Alexander Wang, structured shoulder reigned on the Spring 2014 runways, no matter the model's frame.

And that's when I realized something. Have I been looking at the glass half empty? Is the fashion industry trying to help me out rather than point out my flaws as I've assumed my entire life? Are false shoulders merely a way for me to play pretend?

I have a confession to make. I really love wide shoulders. I'm tired of pulling up my sleeves that have been falling down my arm since I was 4 years old. I'm fed up of those bras that cannot be tightened anymore to suit my shoulder needs. Some would say that shoulder pads were the worst 80's trend. Toronto Fashion Week: What Winter Actually Looks Like

Remember Fall 2014 Fashion Month a few short weeks ago? Remember thinking that this is NOT how people dress in the wintertime unless they are polar bears with an inhuman resistance to low temperatures? That's what World MasterCard Fashion Week is for. Real Canadians know what winter is all about: fur trims, an abundance of leather, and oversized winter accessories. Though fashion remains a fantasy in which we can marvel at beautiful clothes that we'll probably never wear because they are unaffordable or simply impractical, we cannot live in this fantasy weather land where winter does not exist (especially not in Canada). We can always argue that it is #forthesakeoffashion, but alas, we may find ourselves with frostbitten toes and a permanent stuffy nose. Toronto Fashion Week takes us through winter in style while remaining realistic about the reality we must all face: Winter is real. Sickness is also real. And since winter hasn't yet ended, much to our dismay, we can still inspire ourselves with these looks.

Now that Fall Fashion Month has come to an end, it's time to get back to reality and realize that those days are far into the future (7 months away). Spring is slowly approaching like it's slugging behind a turtle, but alas, in a few months, it will arrive. Essentially, this means that this is the time to shop and replenish that spring wardrobe. With the scent of daffodils and rustling grass whispering their song, let's contemplate one of the loveliest spring trends: the Vest.

From McDonalds to Milk, Fashion Month Was All About Food

In lieu of the usual Fashion Week review, I've decided to hand out a series of awards to the spectacular runway shows of this past week. Due to the immense amount of talent at Paris Fashion Week, the possibility of selecting five shows to discuss was simply unfathomable. How can you narrow it down when everyone is just so fabulous? Alas, in honour of last Sunday's Oscars, I was inspired to concoct a list of awards for the shows that stood out. The "Am I On Drugs Or Is This Really Happening?" Award

Jean-Paul Gaultier

Looking for the best DJ in town? He was probably at JPG this week strumming some tunes from the past (including The Clash and Queen). What began as a flight attendant directing our eyes towards the models in-waiting ended with a patriotic tribute to London (even though the show took place in Paris). If you weren't thinking WTF, you probably were on drugs.

The "Got Milk" Award

Duh. This season, Karl Lagerfeld took us to the supermarket. As per usual, there were tweed and pearls involved, but this time, the ladies carried grocery baskets and milk cartons as handbags. The real mystery lay in the locks around their necks. Perhaps: the key to my heart is through food?

The Rainbow Award

The various shades of coats were a feast for the eyes at Dior's Fall 2014 runway show. Raf Simons clearly loves colour and ain't afraid to show it. New trend? Short sleeves, long gloves.

The "Too Cool For School" Award

Saint Laurent Paris

Taking it away every year, Saint Laurent is clearly the most popular girl in school because she doesn't even have to try to be cool. She just is. Are sequins involved? Perhaps. When you're that cool, it isn't a science.

The Grandma's Wardrobe Award

Valentino

Usually, Valentino takes us back 100 years. This season, all we had to do was look into Granny's wardrobe and there it was (unless your Granny lived in the early 20th century). Florals dominated the Valentino runway as well as clown gear that we all secretly want to wear to our next birthday party.

The Downton Abbey Award

This season, Alber Elbaz clearly watched Downton Abbey and took his cues from there. From Edwardian gowns to flapper dresses adorned with feathers, we were taken on a journey through time that involved an abundance of extravagant hats. Apparently, 1920 is SO 2014.

The Gangster Award

Olivier Rousteing knows what women want: to look like Rihanna. That generally involves military jackets, leathers pants, and an abundance of embellishment. So if you're a G, Balmain is where it's at.

The Burgundy Award
Elie Saab
Elie Saab wins the award for the most burgundy used in one show. We all know that Burgundy is Fall's favourite colour. Apparently, that's the only colour. I challenge you to wear burgundy every day for the next month. Can you do it?

The PARTAY Award
Stella McCartney
Aside from Stella's usual sweater sets, the models danced down the runway this season led by Cara Delevingne and Joan Smalls. Who wouldn't want to be at that party?

The Newcomer Award
Louis Vuitton
Yes, yes. I know that Nicholas Guesquiere is no stranger to fashion, but he still refreshed the page of Louis Vuitton and it was quite impressive. We all adored those Louis bags and the new sporty look of Vuitton. It may not have included escalators or trains, but it allowed for a greater emphasis on the fabulous collection of clothes.

The "I Dare You To Walk Down the Stairs in these Shoes" Award
Miu Miu
Why oh why did Miuccia Prada deem it a good idea to have models walk down an endless amount of stairs in heels to get to the runway? Was it a challenge to see which models were worthy of Miu Miu? Or simply a test of their athletic abilities? Who knows? All I know is that Lupita N'Yongo was there and she looked amazing.

There may have not been McDonalds sweaters (MFW) or pizza (The Oscars), but there were definitely some shows that we MUST watch (more than once). Which Paris Fashion Week show was your favourite? Supermarket Chanel or perhaps out of this world Jean Paul Gaultier?

Arrivederci Milano

And another Fashion Week comes to close leaving us all at the edge of our seats as we await the much anticipated Paris. As we exit Milan (in our imaginations), the opulence at Dolce and Gabbana, the flamboyant furs at Fendi, and the vivacious sex appeal at Versace linger in our minds as we begin to mentally reconstruct our Fall wardrobes. While some designers opted for a more edgy rocker chic look (Versace, Just Cavalli, and Fausto Puglisi), others redefined class on their own terms (Gucci, Emporio Armani, Ports 1961) and some offered conspicuous consumption as a treat (Moschino). A Karl doll also made an appearance as well as Spongebob (Yes, you read that correctly). So before perusing the fantasies of Chanel, Lanvin, and Balmain, let's reflect upon the extravagancies of Milan that had us all wishing we were glamorous enough to indulge in them.

GUCCI

Milan Fashion Week started with a bang as Gucci hit the runway. And then it ended. Just kidding. But it might as well have. All other designers go home and make room for Frida Giannini, queen of chic. This collection was sexy librarian meets Austin Powers with luxe furs in sophisticated pastels, knee high flat boots, 60s dresses and wide rimmed glasses, as we were all taken back to a time where glamour reigned supreme. The coats were the main attraction, particularly the leopard print only worthy of a true diva (A.K.A Queen Bey). Brown and pastel leather gave it just the right amount of edge to go from classy fashionista to va-va-voom.

Favourite Look: If you haven't guessed it already: the leopard coat. Duh. (Look 24)

JOHN RICHMOND

John Richmond was comprised of just a few of my favourite things: bulky sweaters, fuzzy coats, and masculine blazers. I can safely say that I had a crush on this collection and wanted ALL OF IT. From the mini dresses in asymmetrical cuts to the floor grazers in abstract floral prints to the wide variety of hooded getups, this was all very effortless and model-off-duty (everything I strive for). Obviously, it increased my desire to wear baggy leather pants too. I also want bangs now. HOW AM I SO EASILY INFLUENCEABLE?

Favourite Look: Look 27. Baggy leather pants, please be mine?

FAUSTO PUGLISI

In a stream of colours, Fausto Puglisi made all my colour blocking dreams come true. Any collection with leather in it is always a favourite of mine. The rule is: the more leather there is, the more obsessed I become. Take note. Another dominant theme: the statue of liberty. Yes, we were in Milan, but the American Dream still permeated the scene, as Lady Liberty appeared on a wide variety of sweaters amongst the colourful rainbow skittles dresses. Ending with embellished skirts, this collection was definitely eye candy.

Favourite Look: Look 8 had my name written all over it. That jacket was insane.

DSQUARED2

I've always adored Dan and Dean Caten because they have thy ey always dress their ladies extravagantly, while avoiding a descent into tackyhood. They're also Canadian (Represent!) and every collection looks like a big party that I'd really like to join. The contrast between vibrant purples and blues with clean white looks was divine and the gowns captured that 1960s beauty of the rich sophisticate. It was a little Audrey Hepburn meets Brigitte Bardot (the greatest combination one can possibly imagine) with shift dresses and large Jackie O sunglasses. The hats reminded us all that fashion week is ALL about the hats (as I've always suspected) and if it were a contest, these bros would win. Also, snakeskin is coming back in a big way, fellas, so get ready.

Favourite Look: Undebatably, look 23. Those glasses are simply amazing with a capital AZING.

FENDI

Obviously. As if you could've ever doubted that Karl wouldn't make this list. Also, I hinted at it yesterday here. It all started with Cara, because who doesn't love Cara? Oh, and the Karl doll dangling from her fingers that nobody will ever forget. Don't you love his sense of humour? If you hadn't figured it out, Karl loves to play with fur. Hence, the fur doll. Incorporating fur in every possible way on wool coats and classic parkas, Karl proves himself to be the master of the trend. From jackets to bags to neckwear, fur dominated the runway, complimenting silky skirts, black mesh, and le fameux leather. Playing with fabrics is clearly his forte as he provides an expert display of layering. Let's all learn from Karl and look this good doing it. If only.
