Get On The Green Scene

Have you heard? There's a disease travelling from Canadian to Canadian called: The Winter Blues. I have it, you have it, and the girl next door has it. It is highly contagious. There is only one cure to this disease and it's not what you think. The arrival of spring is beyond our control and there is no physical medication to take.The past weekend brought the cure we like to call The Irish Greens. As winter spreads through the ides of March, we yearns for that sunshine and crave spring greenery to spurt from the ground. It's also St. Patrick's day, reminding us once again of the green that we lack in our lives. In a sense, it is a protest, demanding the return of the colour green while celebrating Irish culture. Two birds with one stone? I think so. So, let's celebrate green through the one item of clothing we use most at this dire time of year: the transitional jacket. As the weather fluctuates from -5 to +4, we like to play with the variety of jackets in our closets. Here are some of the jackets and coats that permeated the streets of Fall Fashion Week. How High Is Too High?

Let's get one thing cleared up. This blog post is not what you think it is. While on the subject of shoes (my current obsession), I'd like to comment on the high heel craze that has taken over the fashion world.

Everybody raves about the comfort of wedges, a heel that boasts comfort and challenges ladies to take it higher. Back in the stiletto days, we knew our feet would be destroyed if we went too high. Three inches became the maximum heel height as ladies everywhere returned home from their glamorous events with blistering feet to soak them in a bucket of water. When the wedge entered the ball game, stilettos took the back seat and three inches became a laughable height.

If you're as tiny as I am, five inches is the bare minimum and the rule is: if you can bare it, you better wear it. As heels get higher, we find ourselves wondering: why do tall girls look better in high heels? Why do the shorter ladies look like we're on stilts every time we wear a heel above three inches? Though this remains a reality that we cannot contradict, I'm a bit of a rebel and frankly, my rule is that if you can walk in them, the sky is the limit.

According to Brian Atwood, "life is short. Heels shouldn't be". And wise words from a brilliant shoe designer should never be ignored. Another quote to live by: "I would hate for someone to look at my shoes and say, 'Oh my god! That looks so comfortable", spoken by Christian Louboutin. Listen to your Louboutins and your Atwoods. They know what they're talking about!

It's official. Nicole Richie's decision to dye her hair purple has crowned her as style queen. Clearly, she can pull off every look. From her days at The Simple Life as Paris Hilton's BFF to her new mommy status and a career as fashion designer for her own label, House of Harlow, this girl has come a long way. Apparently, Paris is looking for a new bff, but no one beats Nicole. Richie's style combines boho chic with glamorous ease and a little bit of her old edge. She may have been a celebrity baby, but her fierce determination to succeed is what brought her to the top. Take your fashion tips from this fashionista and you're golden. Dearest Stilettos,

Once upon a time, you were the most popular shoe on the market. Women everywhere desired you despite the pain that you caused and collected as many of you as they could squeeze into their closets. You gave them a sense of power and confidence that couldn't be attained through any other means. You were Regina George. Every other shoe wanted to be you. The higher you were, the more covetable you became. Short girls bowed down to you. But alas, your days came to an end. Like a high school prom queen who has finally moved on, you have lost your crown to the white sneaker. At first, you snickered at the thought. How could a sneaker be half as cool as a stiletto? Women want to be tall and elegant. Don't they? When Karl Lagerfeld converted, you knew your days were numbered. Then Marc Jacobs followed suit and your popularity status decreased immensely. However, for a classy night out, you knew you still had a purpose. Suddenly, your arch rival, the wedge, made a comeback. Isabel Marant invited a panoply of sneaker wedges, combining the two biggest shoe trends of 2013-2014. New fashion philosophy? The chunkier, the better. Though Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, and Manolo Blahnik continue to shower you with affection, you know that you must face the reality. Stiletto, you have fallen from grace. During Award Season, women continue to invite you to all the biggest parties, but you've been replaced as designated bestie. I hope you understand that this isn't the end for you. Remember that you'll always have a place in a woman's heart. You may not be number one, but you'll always be that wild high school friend we like to party with every once in a while.

Cara and Karl: A Love Story

Once upon a time, there was a young man named Karl Lagerfeld. A creative soul, he spent his youth exploring his love for women's fashion and rose to the top as creative director of fashion houses, Fendi and Chanel. One day, he met fresh British face, Cara Delevingne. It was love at first sight. Her infectious laugh and rambunctious personality drew him in and ever since, they've been Ernie and Bert, Thelma and Louise, Bonnie and Clyde. An inseparable pair. 

This season, Cara expressed her mutual love for Karl by ending his Fendi Fall 2014 runway show carrying a furry doll mimicking his appearance. He returned the favour by holding her hand at the end of his Chanel supermarket extravaganza.

Following these shows, Karl compared Cara to a young Kate Moss, super model queen, and Charlie Chaplin, the expressive actor with elaborate facial expressions from the early 20th century. Have you ever heard of such comparisons? The only person Karl adores more than his precious Choupette is Cara. Don't believe me? Graphic Prints: Because I Like To Read On The Go

Back in the 90s, everyone was wearing their heart on their sleeves (literally). It was an angst-filled decade where grunge was all the rage (puns!) and we all had an undying need to express ourselves (I use the general we, but I was merely a toddler at the time). Today, this trend has magically resurfaced with the 90s resurrection as designers from Versace to Kenzo were inserting subliminal messages in their clothing. What do these messages mean? What should we take from all this? People want to read on the go and self-expression has become more explicit. In the age of social media and the selfie, it is no wonder designers are screaming their thoughts on the runways. Personally, I love words and combining fashion with language is my ice cream sundae.
