End of Season! End of Season!

via www.adammlynarczyk.com
The end of season deserves two exclamation points for a number of reasons. Though the end of summer may seem like a very depressing time as stores begin to stock up on their fall collections and magazines start advertising fur coats and leather boots, we can't help but feel that spurt of excitement at the thought of a new season commencing. A new season always feels like a page is being turned. We get to experiment with new fashion trends we may have never tried before and dig into our creative souls for inspiration on who we want to be this year. Fashion is all about self-expression and as a Canadian, you have the privilege of wearing every type of clothing possible due to the disparity in weather conditions upon each season. What is the correlation, you ask? With all of these diverse temperatures, the world of fashion is open to you and the explorative options are endless. While living in the heat may be wonderful and pleasant, you'll never know what it's like to slip on a luxurious fur a la Rachel Zoe and feel that warmth as you step outside in -30 degree weather. In Canada, anything is possible and therefore, your self-development can go a long way. Now, allow me to get to the point.

Let's talk about 8 reasons the end of season is the best time of year.

NUMBER 8
Sales, Sales, Sales
Though this may seem obvious, it is crucial to this list. We can detach ourselves from those sad emotions arising at the thought of winter by heading to the stores and getting all our favourite summer pieces on sale to store for next year. It may sound like unhealthy depression shopping, but who's counting.

NUMBER 7
New Collections
This is the perfect time to get a taste of what's to come. With all the stores giving us a sneak peak, it's the perfect opportunity to plan that new wardrobe.

NUMBER 6
Fashion Week
The absolute BEST part about the end of season is that it is usually followed by Fashion Week. Though the thought of winter may be depressing, Spring Fashion Week in September reminds us that the warmth is still within our reach.

NUMBER 5
Wardrobe Surprises!
Allow me to elaborate. Remember last season when you
bought those leather lace up booties and couldn't wear them because the weather wasn't quite there yet. You can now take them out of that hiding place and slip them onto your feet because Fall is here!

NUMBER 4
New Beginnings
New clothes generally signal new beginnings. Though one chapter is ending, another is beginning. It's time to start dreaming again.

NUMBER 3
Transitional Clothing
Nobody will judge you at this time of year for wearing boots with shorts. Take full advantage while you can.

NUMBER 2
Another Excuse To Shop
For those of you who shop scarcely throughout the year, this is your time. You may not shop often, but end of season is deal time and that money you've been saving is about to get its due.

NUMBER 1
Time To Discard
This is the perfect time of year to refresh that wardrobe but getting rid of items you no longer wear to make room for the new. And there's nothing more refreshing than cleansing.

It's time to look at the positive. Stop thinking it's the end and start looking at it as a new beginning.

Shirt Dresses: My Current Obsession

Whoever invented the shirt dress was a freaking genius.

I remember being a little girl watching 13+ movies (even though I shouldn't) and aspiring to be a teenager wearing her boyfriend's shirt after a wild night together (even though I shouldn't). There's something undeniably sexy about a girl in an oversized button down, particularly when I looks like she took it from some handsome man. It signals that he conquered her, and though I don't particularly like the term 'conquest' in this context, I can't deny the sex appeal of the oversized shirt.

Today, women can achieve this look without borrowing it from their beau and being deemed conquered. Ever since androgyny become the new fad, designers have been taking bits and pieces from a man's wardrobe and integrating them into their collections for women. From baseball caps at DKNY to masculine blazers at Michael Kors, our favourite designers are taking their inspiration from the boy next door.

It's almost as though we are experiencing the sexual revolution all over again (and we probably need to considering all the talks about feminism and hook-up culture).

Where does this desire come from? Why are we all being pulled in by masculine attire? Are we going to shed our dresses for more practical clothing? Are we still trying to assert ourselves in society or are we simply feeling experimental?

Though we've opted for masculine choices in our wardrobes, one thing remains the same: our high heels. Whether a killer wedge or a sexy stiletto, our femininity resurfaces in our footwear. There's nothing sexier than a woman in a pantsuit and high heels, so you can only imagine the effect of stilettos with the shirt dress.

Let's Go Back to Basics

Thoughts that cross my mind when I'm staring into the endless abyss I call a closet:

1) I have nothing to wear (cliche of the day)!
2) This doesn't go with ANYTHING I own.
3) Boring. Boring. Boring.
4) Too flashy for this event.
5) How long has it been since I even wore this?
6) Why does it look like I have so many clothes when I don't?
7) I need to go shopping!
8) I don't own enough pairs of pants.
9) Oh, this old thing? No.
10) I'm dizzy

Admittedly, I have a lot of thoughts that spring into my fashion-overwhelmed mind. Sometimes, I think that I will forever be doomed to reside in a realm of constant desire and satisfaction will never be achieved. Why is my closet so full and yet I have nothing? The fact is that there are way too many items I don't wear often and not enough BASICS. Basics are the keynote to every successful wardrobe. We need them like we need water. They are the fuel to our shopaholic engine. Without the basics, how can we adequately layer? What do you do with a bunch of layering pieces and no basics to layer over? Absolutely nothing.

Unfortunately, basics are the most difficult to buy because we are often drawn through love at first sight to the striking items in a store. "Oooohhh that cobalt blazer has to be mine!" and "I need those tribal printed pants NOW" are thoughts that resonate in our minds on our shopping excursions and NOT "I want that plain white-tee" or "Necessities are such a thrill". No. We don't crave necessities. We just need them. We need to invest in them even though we'd rather save our money on something special.

The bright side is that once you have them, it's for life and they will transform your wardrobe. No more: "what will match with this?" because with your basics, you'll always find that perfect match.

So here are the basic items you NEED (if you don't have them already). They may appear boring at first glance but they are revolutionary and integral to the layering game. Once they're yours, you can go on a shopping binge of impractical items like furry sandals and sleeveless jackets.

1) A PLAIN WHITE TEE (a black)
- You need this to layer your brand new tuxedo vest or your military jacket. You also need to put it under all your colourful blazers. Having both colours will facilitate every outfit decision that you make, and if you'd rather not invest, you can probably find them for 10$ at Forever 21.

2) BLUE JEANS (and black)
- A classic pair of jeans is a staple. Obviously. No matter what you're feeling, jeans will always be just right. If you're not in the mood to get fancy, but you have to? Put on those jeans and grab any crazy top from your closet. They match EVERYTHING. It's magical.

3) BLACK PUMPS
- Now, I know what you're thinking. I never go out. At least not to a place that requires pumps. What for? Well, one day you'll be happy you bought these beauties because though they may hide in the back of your closet, when your friend gets married and you need something to wear with your bright red dress, those black pumps will be very enticing.

4) LEGGINGS
- Even if you don't go to the gym, you need leggings. They solve all your sick day problems with the utmost comfort and the least possible effort. They are NOT PANTS, but they will look super cute with that oversized sweater you just bought at H&M.

5) WHITE BLOUSE
- Whether a job interview or simple a night out with your girls, a white blouse is that "I don't even need to think" choice that you can just slip on with a pencil skirt or pants. It should just be in your wardrobe in case you need it, like your reliable childhood friend.

6) AN LBD
- If you aren't familiar with this acronym, we have a serious problem. An LBD, otherwise known as the Little Black Dress, is a must. When you have an semi-fancy affair to attend and no budget for it, this LBD lying in your closet is an easy solution. Keep it there and you won't regret it.

7) A PENCIL SKIRT
- Family events and job interviews generally call for pencil skirts. I'd go for black first for that standard look, but you might love what it does to your body so much that you'll get another colour or dare I say, a print.

8) BALLET FLATS
- I hate flats. They're the most unflattering shoe on the planet. HOWEVER, you need them. Sometimes we need to treat our feet and allow them to heal from our heels. Purchase a pair of ultra comfortable flats that happen to be chic and you win at wardrobes.

9) TANK TOPS (1 Black, 1 White)
- Everything today is transparent. So, here's the key: TANK TOPS. You need to wear them under your blouses OR on their own at the gym. Either way, they need a place in that wardrobe to ensure that classiness is upheld.

10) FINALLY: A BLAZER
- It's just something you might want to have for that impending job interview I keep talking about. It also amps up EVERY look. I swear.

HONOURABLE MENTION: A leather jacket (you don't need this, but you kind of do. It adds coolness factor to everything. Take note.

That's only ten items! It's time to make a budget, ladies, and get the boring stuff out of the way. Once you do, you may still wonder what to wear, but there will always be a solution.

New Years Is Just Another Excuse To Go Shopping

I woke up this morning and shuffled through my wardrobe to figure out what outfit would suit my current mood only to get swallowed up by an array of sweatshirts and jeans (we've all suffered through THAT experience). The following discovery was made: I have absolutely nothing to wear for New Years. The panic set in at the thought that I'd be wearing something "old" for New Years. Isn't what you wear on New Years meant to represent how amazing your year will be? I mean, it must be bad luck to recycle an old outfit upon the commencement of a new year, right? Like a tsunami, these thoughts came rushing through my head and in a frenzy, I experienced that lightbulb moment. I HAD to go shopping.

via hotofftherunway.wordpress.com
As a self-proclaimed shopaholic, I always get a thrill at the thought of purchasing something new (who doesn't?). As a result, I tend to search for every possible excuse to shop. If it's not New Years, it's my birthday. If it's not my birthday, it's my best friend's birthday. And if it's not my best friend's birthday, well, it's just the start of a new season and I NEED new clothes (obviously). Or do I? Am I just looking for excuses or do I really need something new? Is there a reason why I have an unnatural amount of unworn dresses in my wardrobe? Am I insane? Are we all insane? Are we all shopaholics? What's a "good" reason to shop? Are we all just being sucked into this massive consumerist hole, never to resurface?

All these questions are merely meant for you to question your choices when you shop. Do I really love this top or do I just want something to buy? Will I love it in 3 weeks? We all need to make smarter shopping decisions because I haven't met one person who hasn't had a single regret after a mindless purchase. Does this shirt really fit me just right or is it a little too broad on the shoulders? Will I really wear this? Do these shoes ACTUALLY fit or am I just too blinded by love? World knows I've fallen in love one too many times!

Peace Out,

Bella
